If all this electrickery does kick off, how long before the government puts a higher tax on charging to get back what they have lost on fuel tax.

How will they be able to differentiate between electric for charging and standard electric for home use?  I bet they just put the price of it all up.

Easy ,the government introduce a  road fund licence for electric vehicles.

Vic.

It'll be pay per mile as a replacement for road fund licence or whatever they call it these days. Electricity per unit will go up but not just because of EVs.

That said, hydrogen could well overtake EV by the time EV batteries provide the necessary range for a single charge, then your water rates will go up 🙂

and they'll introduce a water collection charge based on the volume of your water butt and the catchment of your rain gutters

Why would your water rates go up. The by product of hydrogen fuel cells is clean water

Collecting rain water to filter and use isn't hard.

Or am I missing something in your post?

The government will always get us to follow their new trend then hammer us when we do, like with diesel cars. Diesel was much cheaper years ago now it costs more than petrol.

I was working on the basis that the future hydrogen production at scale would be through electrolysis and would be highly reliant on large quantities of water, but I might be wrong as I guess the technology does not yet exist at scale? I'm happy to withdraw the water rates comment if I'm wrong 🙂

Yes, I remember the diesel being cheaper than gasoline which on one hand makes sense as it requires less processing to produce compared to gasoline but on the flip side it contains more calories per unit compared to gasoline (as I'm sure you're aware).

my son works in body repair electric cars need a specialist to disconnect batteries  / coordained off in a designated area to discharge before repairs can be carried out  ,  cars take 4 or 5 people to push them in and out of workshop , as others 1 driver to move , insurance repair costs higher , my fear is what happen when a car mounts barriers on a motorway the batteries short out emergency services have to let it burn   been quite a few killed working on electric vehicles in repairs / recovery etc where my son works a big red label placed on the front and back screen to alert the workforce      if we want 0 emissions a hydrogen car  simple a petrol engine with a hydrogen cell fitted,  thirty years this was developed , however anybody can make hydrogen so no taxes to pay,  electric cars you pay on your bill on an already over loaded grid network  and the batteries are only guaranteed for five years and you don't own them if you buy the car hence leasing is the way forward (shorter life expectancy more emissions in manufacture and disposal of said vehicle) a land rover built in the sixties / seventies still on the road has less impact on the environment than an electric car

Stop being so sensible, you would never get on in politics.

I really wonder when the Hydrogen solution will be made to work as all the other green alternatives just move the polution away from the vehicle!

Interesting to note your points about the Battery powered vehicles and their maintainance risks.

hydrogen was sorted thirty years ago all the car manufacturer's were developing engines ford chose to develop the cells and poach the engine developers later then governments found anyone can make the brown gas so no subs to pay  , so no kickbacks,   so dead in the water so to speak  , so easy to convert a standard petrol car to hydrogen its unbelievable    a guy in America did a cross country in a hydrogen car the oil companies bought his pattern and was never heard of again

I'd heard about that years ago!

cars have been running on gas / electric since the wars  be it coal gas, lpg, hydrogen,  henry ford built the model t to run on moon shine which is  now known a ethanol  so in over 100 years we are repeating history more efficient engines but nothing new next will be a nuclear reactor with a 25year life span as submarines drama about disposing after lol

I can remember two Austin engineers from Longbridge coming to Canley in Coventry with a mini that was running on Hydrogen. The story goes that the patent was brought by the petrol companies and the project shelved.

On a different subject people who now my habits are aware that I drive down to Greece each year. Which I complete in two and a half days including 24 hours on a ferry fron Northen Italy to Greece. The first leg is Brum , Chunnel , St Gothard tunnel to the top of Italy. Next day down to Anconna and ferry . With an electric car I will have to stop to recharge at least twice, so what is the advantage !
