The Stielhandgranate (German for "stalk hand grenade") was a German hand grenade of unique design. It was the standard issue of the German Empire during World War I, and became the widespread issue of Nazi Germany's Wehrmacht during World War II. The very distinctive appearance led to it being called a "stick grenade", or "potato masher" in British Army slang, and is today one of the most easily recognized infantry weapons of the 20th century

I have just got home from Duxford. What a great day seeing so many Dakotas in one place at one time, a sight i will never see again. The sight and sound of all those WW2 planes was fantastic. The weather wasnt up for the Red Devils to parachute in was disappointing, but still a great day. Lets hope the weather is good for the 250 paratroopers who are dropping out of those planes over the D Day landings.

For those hoping to see them in Southend on Sea area the Echo newspaper website says a route change means they will no longer fly over the pier but over the airport and Westcliff. The Echo website, and newspaper, is not always very accurate in its reporting however. Plus the weather could effect routing I guess.

My neighbour found a case of them unissued on a building site in germany, there was a small box inside with all the fuses to be inserted on the main unit at point of delivery up at the front, makes sense for shipping them as they would be inert.

I watched the whole flight, first 2 fighters, spitfires I assume (they were at distance over the sea) riding shotgun, then the Dakotas in ones, two's and threes flying low over Eastbourne and out to sea, I was standing by the bandstand on the seafront.....they were 2/3 hrs later than scheduled.......but it was a magnificent sight.
