Really good series after watching it (just got the last episode to do tonight) without doing spoilers I had to fast forward through the dog bits as I am a big softies when it comes to dogs so it was a bit hard to take :) .

The disregard for human life in the name of covering up the full extent of what had happened even in the early years of Glasnost was  real eye opener. Reminiscent of throwing waves of young men into the teeth of machine guns and panzers during the second world war "the motherlands thanks you for your service"

Best thing I've ever seen.

Wife and I said over and over, "I don't believe it", "Did they really do that", "that's incredible", etc.

Amazing TV

Agreed.

The lamb restrictions in the UK were only lifted in 2012!

Some interesting links on the series....

I watched the last one last night, brilliantly done. You don't really think of things that huge on such a personal scale, until you hear true stories like the fireman and his wife. As said though, the scale of the denial and cover up from the Soviets was staggering.

Watched and enjoyed.

Its exactly as I'd imagined the old soviet block interacting with the outside world and its own.

Quick question. The 3 legs of power were Party, KGB and Military. The Party and KGB had representatives on all the Military installations and assets but did the military have peeps in the party and KGB offices?

Yup. Like the death toll. USSR refusing to put it at anything other than the initial deaths plus emergency crew of 37.

Excellent series from start to finish.

I read a Russia Today report on it, where they interview the General who's in it. They criticise it for being MASSIVELY inaccurate and how it's appalling how they could get away with such absurdness.

They then go on to criticise really minor things and use that as their justification. I won't go into all of them so I don't spoil too much but one AWFUL misrepresentation was, when the chaps come out to open the draining valves, they drank vodka after coming out, but they didn't drink vodka. Scandal.

Weirdly, as I read it, I felt that the General who was being interviewed wasn't altogether playing ball with the leading questions. His answers agreed with the inconsistencies, but he talked about the big picture too, much of which did tie in with the Drama.

Apparently there's going to be a Russian version of Chernobyl, in which it all gets blamed on a CIA saboteur. Some things never change
