Scrapping my car

Hi all,

Apologies for the long post...

So the time has come that it is going to cost almost as much as my car is worth to get it back on the road.

It's currently sitting in a garage and the owner is egging me on to just let him take care of scrapping the car (with no payment to me) with the line of "we do it properly, make sure u get certificate of destruction, won't end up back on the road with liability for parking tickets  etc). He is a trusted garage and mechanic of my other Half's father so am inclined to believe him when he says this.

I know there are companies like www.redcorn.co.uk who say they will take the car, scrap it and pay me a couple hundred quid.

I must have had a dozen random people calling wanting to take it for scrap since putting my details into one of these scrap my car websites.

I had an interesting run in with a gentleman yesterday who wanted to take it for scrap but frankly he was had such an attitude and seemed so untrustworthy I didn't let him take it.

My questions are:

1. who do I trust, the garage who say they will do it properly or the scrappers who are willing to pay me??

2. Once I fill out the yellow slip on the v5 and return it to the DVLA is that my liability on the vehicle done, even if the scrapper writes in a bogus company and details??

It seems like a minefield :)

Thanks

By the way if anyone wants a non running 05 Toyota Avensis let me know!!!

A few things to consider. What car is and its condition, someone may give you a few quid and fix it them selves.

How long has it been at the garage taking up space and how much time they have put in to it, the few quid they would get for scrap may just cover what it has cost them to check it over and store it for you.

Ring up a few companys most well known and established companys pay you when they collect it there and then and fill out the log book for scrap in front of you so you know it wont be reused & off it goes into scrap yard heaven.

What's up with it? Those Toyota avensis are good cars! Is it the diesel one??

We have a Skoda octave elegance brought it brand new back in 2003 turbo went in 2016 was told to scrap it but the car only done hundred thousand and body work was good so I spent 450 on new turbo the car is still going strong we use it for going on long drives to go fishing as it very good on diesel getting 48 to the gallon against my Nissan Navar at 26 to the gallon.

Tax and insurance is only 425 a year.

It is a good car and seems a shame to scrap it, yeah 2.2 diesel.

The fuel pump has gone plus needs new tyres and discs/pads....I guess with all that it's going to cost best part of 800 quid to fix.

Car is prob worth a grand.

Only 135k on the clock and should be good for another 100 really.

Looking to replace it with a Rav or possibly one of them Dacia dusters.

My mate sold his frontera recently and the police knocked his door a week later. It was found abandoned. The guy he sold it to had sold it again without a v5. My mate just explained and all was good. That’s just selling so as long as you get your bit I wouldn’t worry .

Get a receipt and fill the v5 and cert of destruction and don’t worry.

I’d advertise spares repairs and get more for it plus you don’t need to worry then .

Ill add that my terios is £700 but I’d spend £500 on it as it’ll cost more than that for another.

If you know the cars sound I’d splash out.

My questions are:

1. who do I trust, the garage who say they will do it properly or the scrappers who are willing to pay me?? - I'd say it makes no odds but it depends how much you owe the garage as to which makes the most sense financially.

2. Once I fill out the yellow slip on the v5 and return it to the DVLA is that my liability on the vehicle done, even if the scrapper writes in a bogus company and details?? Yes, you would have met your requirement by doing so.

It seems like a minefield :)

Thanks

I've answered you questions above but also agree with others that it may be worth fixing up. It depends how you view the maintenance of the vehicle, tyres & brakes are a given cost so I'd not be including them within the "repair" cost personally.

I'd be thinking more along the lines of how long have I owned the vehicle, what has it cost me over the past X years, do you regularly maintain it for example? What is a replacement likely to cost?

If you've not owned it long you could have bought someone else's problem..

Ok so thanks to those who replied.

Turns out it wasn't the pump it was an injector, a bolt had come loose but she's back on the road for a shade over 300 quid including all the diagnostics etc.

As said it's a decent motor so will keep it going for a while longer! Just as well the scrapper was such a **** :)

  • 3 years later...

After many years of happy motoring we also had to scrap our car we found the most convenient way to get rid of our vehicle was an online company we searched the Internet for a local company and come across https://scrap-car-price.co.uk/ after weeks of people not turning up to collect we achieved a great price
