A total tragedy all round: For the boy who died, for his immediate family, his extended family and even the granddad who will have to live with what he did. Its even a tragedy that the bloke felt he needed to have what sounds like a heavily modified air rifle to hand because our courts won't hand out proper deterent sentencing to burglars.

His daughter is now calling for ALL air guns to be licenced.......I sympathise with her loss, but her ire should be directed at the criminal, who was knowingly in possession of a modified air gun, which was in law, an illegal firearm!............Rather than trying to demonise standard sub 12 foot pound airguns, which are and should remain perfectly legal to hold off ticket.

Although I do agree, a sub 12ft lb in the wrong hands is as deadly as an FAC.

Licensing wouldn't of stopped him owning it though, it stated in the report he didn't apply for a licence due to medical reasons. So again it's illegally held by someone who wouldn't of got a licence.

And law abiding owners who will get the screw tightened

true, true. Also, kudos for using the word ire. An excellent word sadly rarely given the light of day!

Much like Scotland then, the SNP had a consultation on the possibility of licencing (sub) 12ftlb airguns and carried on even though, iirc, 80+% of respondents were against it. Best of luck in this political era

It doesn’t say in the above article why he held the air rifle, so “because the courts won’t hand out proper sentencing to burglars” is pure speculation unless it was mooted elsewhere?

I read it was to shoot pest in his garden, nothing to do with potential burglary.
