Doc Holliday
As per the title. Also, would like to know if the units that don't need the external fan unit/chiller are worth a carrot as these are what Im considering over the ones which have the external unit. Thanks in advance. figgy
Look at how efficient they are, they have to loose heat somewhere.
NoBodyImportant
If you are talking about a mini split then they work better then a traditional unit. The higher the seer rating the more efficient they are. Edited July 16, 2019 by NoBodyImportant
Eyefor
Take a look at the Daikin range. Cheaper than the "traditional" makes and made in the UK. Have their AC units in our place in America for many years without a single issue and their air source heat pump / LPG combi boiler combo unit is going in to our new house in the UK. No connection with seller other than a happy customer.

Lots of people use them at the coast because they down what to spend money on a Mitsubishi only to have it rust out.
oowee
Free standing internal units will work well but require external vent to a window. They rely on venting air so will reintroduce warm air at the same time. They will properly cool a room but they are much nosier than the external units as the compressor and fan are both in the room. You can get a decent mini split (9000 btu x2) for less than a £1000 and to have it fitted is about £650.

Bought a second hand free standing unit last year, really wanted to see what we end up with.It does chill a large 6mx4m bedroom but is so noisy the only way to go is a split unit
Lord Geordie
Any good? I have an all in one that you couple to an external vent. It’s efficient enough for a decent sized room, but the fan used for transfering heat from the condenser is really loud. The compressor noise is not that bad though. I fitted one of the above types at my other half’s house for her Son. They are simple to install. Just be sure when you straighten the pipework you don’t crack it. But it’s been in there around 8 year now and still working great! Outside unit has some rust now, but if that’s a problem a quick lock of paint now and then would be easy enough.
