Can anyone point me to video's of no 7 (or even a 6) shot smashing through a pallet at 120 yards ? Come to think of it can anyone point me to any video's of "patterns" at 100 meters ?

40 years ago shells were made from powder, lead shot, plastic wads , primers and outer plastic shell, today they are made from the same basic components, tiny gains have been made in pattern density and of course velocity but anyone who thinks those advances can account for being able to use "skill" as opposed to "luck" in hitting a clay at 130 yards is, ballistically speaking, naive.

Thanks Perazzishot, 👏.

Now, you do realise that it is BECAUSE of those video's that we know shooting game at 90 yards and clays at 130 is stupid right ?

You have constantly said it is not possible to shoot past 60 yards and it's lucky pellets blah blah blah. You just watched recorded live shoot clays from a 100yds to 130yds missing only 1 requiring a 2nd barrel. Gees that guy is lucky eh!

You asked to a pattern at 120 yards after I said technology evolves so i have.

Now everyone is stupid, pretty fair to say when you are faced with facts and result to insults you have lost your argument!

I'm away shooting!

I've never said 60 yards is the max range.

That video of a guy shooting a highly specialised (and dangerous) load proves normal loads cannot be used to shoot past 70 yards RELIABLY.

If you really think people can break 130 yard clays consistently without relying on luck then I'm afraid you simply don't understand how shot gun ballistics work.

Maybe we can set up a day when you can prove to us naysayers how "skill" alone can break clays at those ranges ?

Incidentally, George is on record as saying 70 yards is about the max reliable range at which game can be hit and killed. ;)

Some good shooting

is there a video available of the shooting?

All the best

of

Yes there is one on FB, I skipped through a few minutes but decided to savour it for the day I get solitary confinement in a Sawdi jail.

In case anyone can't be bothered to find the video it's mainly people stepping up and predictably missing a target presented well beyond the remit of a clay gun/load.

Thanks for that information thankfully I don’t have fb 🙄

Just for fun we’re toying with the idea of running a long bird fun challenge, 50, 70, 90 and 110 yards.

All targets the same sort of presentation, whatever cartridge load the shooter wants.  They can shoot magnum loads of 3s if they like.

I’d lay a wager right now that the 110 target will be broken less than 8% of the time.

The 90 will be less than 15%.

If we do it i’ll post up the results.

Clay club I've been a member of for years used to have little comps. Step back pool shoot was fun. Teal target at around forty yards all put your money in. Each get two shots to break it. All who do step back five yards and so on until we have a winner  most would break the seventy yard clay easily. After that it went down to a few quick. Eighty five and ninety yards was common for the last few with some choke and top range carts.

I look forward to it and would like to see at what distance a clay can be repeatedly broken with what load through what degree of choke.

It really does depend on target type and presentation, it's no secret for instance that compared to Std size clays Mini's shatter very easily as do Midi's, a thin, brittle battue presented such that it shows face in the sweet spot can be consistently (not 100% obviously) broken at 80 yards because a single pellet will not only break it but give the impression of a decent break, a std edge on at the same range will prove very hard to connect with (if one is depending on reliable mathematical probability of hits) never mind the fact a single strike from a 7.5 won't have the required power to reliably cause breaks. The same std clay presented showing underface will break easily enough at 75 yards.

The problem here is that if you watch several people shoot these kinds of targets occasionally a target will break into hundreds of pieces (because 2 or even 3 pellets will have hit it) which gives the impression that the shooter has properly "found" it, the same shooter will have made identically successful shots which cause mere poor breaks, people mistakenly deduce that "finding" it is just a matter of more practice when in reality you have arrived at the max remit of the combination (choke/pellet size/velocity/pellet quality).

Whenever we see these kinds of distance shooting displays the shooter tends to change shells from ordinary clay loads to heavy 5.5 pigeon or game loads, this is done to maintain density whilst making sure that a single strike still has enough energy to cause a break.

I personally think any presentation beyond approximately 70 yards is beginning to test luck as well as skill so should be avoided.
