1983 hw80 refurb

Hi all. I’ve just acquired a hw80 in .22. By looking at the serial number I think it’s from 1983. It’s quite rough in places as it’s just been propped up against a door most of its life. I’m hoping to someone will be able to advise me of the best way to bring it back to life. There is light rust on the action and barrel, the wood has had its finish rubbed off in places. I’ll try to get some pictures up. Does anyone know of anyone that’ll refurbish it?

Thanks in advance.

hello, there is some good strip down guide videos on U tube, but you might need a compressor  to take off the pre load when you unscrew the back block, once you have all the rifle stripped you can see if any problems like wonky spring or old piston seal, light rust is very very fine wire wool and 3 in 1 oil, the wood stock you could clean off and maybe a nice wood oil, post some photos as is now,

Hi

Airgun Forum would be a good start for the options - keep it original - strip, clean and rebuild - or improve with minor tweaks/replacement items for a better users experience.

Lots of knowledgeable/experienced folk, seem more than happy to help.

hello, that should not take much to clean, check out U tube video, strip down get all parts in some cleaning fluid, dry off and see what the wear is on the piston, inside tube, spring, piston seal, then start to clean off the light rust, the stock you could use a paint stripper or just sandpaper medium to fine, once that is done you can see if you want to use some cold bluing or have a proper job done, finish with a tune kit, some say that the tinbum kits are not ideal but Nick sells 100s with very few problems, quite a few chaps on the uk air gun forum are very good on HW springers so worth joining,

As above sandwell field sports. Tony or John will sort the action however if you want to do the stock remove it first then use 0000 grade wire wool until its mint then use true oil 5 to 7 coats and the wax it. If theres any small dents get a wet clothe and a hot iron and put the wet clothe over the det and put the iron on the dented area for a few seconds and keep doing this until its raised then sand it smooth. All that before true oil

To my mind the HW80 is one of the best springers ever made.

Here's mine. It's been tarted up somewhat and shoots 5p groups with .22 AA Diabolo Fields at 27 yards at a very consistent 11.66 ft lbs.

Spec is:

Custom Stock CS500, Wegu buttpad.
Rowan Engineering extra-setback trigger.
Rowan Engineering trigger guard.
Deben Whisper 180 silencer.
Tinbum T Pro Tuning Kit i, including short-stroke extension.

Wish you all the best with your project Medic1281  You'll love yours when it's all done !!
