They are very easy to work on.

Out of interest, what are the symptoms ?

Loaded 2, fired first one, it ejected cleanly, loaded second one, which then did not fire....took it out, no sign of any marks on primer, put it back in, tried again, same result. Tried a different brand of cartridge, still no luck! Thinking it,s the firing pin?

Try B.T. Customs and Repairs at Hatton Derbyshire Dave. He's a Remington 1100 specialist. 07929956460.  Have a go yourself first though the are dead simple to work on.

Thanks, have now spoken to him.

If the first round is firing it seems unlikely to be the pin. A clean extraction, ejection and reload would appear to indicate a full cycle is taking place. If there is a click for the second shot, then the hammer would seem to be falling, possibly slowly? If no click for second shot then maybe the hammer is not engaging the sear and is riding the bolt forward. 1100’s are reliable and straightforward but do rely on being clean and having free movement, not dripping in oil as this can cause viscous braking. Grit, unburnt powder etc can cause problems within the tigger mechanism affecting springs, levers, toggles and cams. Without stripping the assembly, an airline is a simple way to clean it out. Good luck, I am sure it is a fairly minor issue that should be easy to remedy

There is a nylon bushing the bolt that gets distorted with age and use . This has been known to cause problems .Gas ports clean , if an old one then it has valves that needed adjusting .Recoil spring follower and fork .O ring on the piston  There was a spring stirp fixed onto the action that came loose . Loose worn forend not holding correctly . All sorts of possibles .

Thanks for that info, but the gun is in immaculate clean condition. It failed after the first cartridge fired, and has not fired since......I,m almost certain it,s the firing pin. I don,t have the time to strip it myself (or, to be honest, the inclination!), so it,s off to the gunsmith tomorrow.

True, I,ve checked most of them. The gun is relatively modern, all the innards look good. as far as I can see, and I keep it very clean, both externally, and internally.

Sorry I misread you OP. I thought you meant that it would fire the first but not the 2nd each time. It does indeed sound like a firing pin issue, good luck with your smith and keep  the Remington flag flying!

Turned out to be the small spring that pushes the firing pin, broken, now replaced. However, got another problem, previous owner tried to remove cartridhe follower, and  slightly damaged it!  Without removing mag. crimp, it,s impossible to remove!  Am going to try to get a replacement one (Titanium, or stainless) from my USA contacts.
