Triggerfish dinner

I had a bit of luck on the kayak this morning and bagged a triggerfish. They're still not particularly common in our waters, certainly not enough to predict catching them, but should you ever come across it, I heartily recommend it.

This one was caught on small squid strips on a strong size 2 hook in Dorset. He weighed in at over 3 lb and did a very nice meal indeed.

Their skins are as tough as old boots and apparently it affects the flavour once cooked, so getting it off first is time well spent.

Then a quick sprinkling of salt and pepper, followed by a coating of flour, with some crushed garlic on top for good measure and it was good to go. It was fried in olive oil for three minutes or so each side (it produced really thick fillets!) and then served with some fresh veg. and chips.

It went particularly well with the cider - but then what doesn't go particularly well with cider?

Well done. We get them here (called leatherjackets), but no one fishes for them or is interesting in eating them. The Aussies seem to like them though. There is a running joke that Berkley Gulp soft baits were designed to catch leatherjackets. In some places, Gulp baits get attacked by leatherjackets almost as soon as they hit the water. It's very annoying!
