Thomas Cook has done one

I was due to fly to Mexico on Friday with TC. No email from them this morning nothing!!!. Even a generic one would have been better than nothing. Mad rush to find an alternative holiday. Although it won’t be Mexico now. We’ll have to do that next year. And as a previous post said, up to two months for our money back. I think that’s wishful thinking, with the numbers of people out of pocket at the moment.

The CEO of Cook's was having a bit of a sorry do on the TV today. Didn't mention the £8,000,000 in bonus he had since 1914.
Sheer bloody greed when people are sleeping in street doorways.
Nobody needs this much money in 5 years.

Their problem was that they were probably too expensive rather than cheap compared to Easy jet and Ryan air ,none of whom I believe had high street shops to prob up like TCs had ,I can honestly say I’ve never used a travel agent for holidays always booked flights and hotels ourselves, why pay someone else to do what we can and I’m guessing a lot of other people have done they same ,great shame for their employees though

a work mate has just lost £5k for a hol to Mexico he was due to go on next week to TCs,hes unsure if he will get his money back

How can you say that when you've NEVER used a travel agent😳?   Speaking from personal experience, TC's have saved me thousands on cruise holidays over the years👍

Anyway, I've just spent a couple of hundred quid on t'internet shopping today, so I'm part of the reason the High Street can't survive much longer…..🤔

Going slightly off track , I am now the same , I used Swinton for all my insurance , for a number of years they had a shop in our town ( Yarmouth ) then two years ago they moved in with there  Lowertoft  branch , now they have shut that branch and you have to use them on line if you want to continue dealing with Swinton's

They have just sent me a reminder for this years car insurance ( £372 ) , looking on go compare with the exactly the same details the A A was over £100 cheaper and that was with the standard breakdown cover thrown in , as you say about the High St surviving .

Over 40 years ago, i was very proud to open my brand new travel agency ,at that time Thos Cook was the role model to aim for about 20 years ago the same Thos Cook started down the slippery road to ruin and joined the other high street holiday shops using cheap untravelled staff with very little expertise. Stack um high, sell um cheap...... Most of the clients who booked through the travel agent will be Ok as they will be covered by ABTA or one of the other bonded companies around,  but may have to wait many months to get refunded. I only used to use ABTA companies and if one of them failed , I immediatly re booked my clients out of my own pocket and waited the normal 4 months for ABTA to refund me. One particular booking for a wealthy lady cost me £28,000 untill i was repaid but that is what ethical companies would do. Fat chance of that happening today. The Chief executive of Thos Cook is on £6.8 million a year,  man at the top £8.4 million and all the many non executive on £4 million each.....Thank God I sold my business before the loons took over........ from Auntie.

Yes he does, I had a lot of very loyal clients and the company is still turning over a million pounds a year. Secret is to keep away from the bucket and spade stuff.. There used to be a similar shop to mine up in your neck of the woods..... Hank Sharpe Travel, I believe his 2 sons still do OK out of the company. It was the only travel agent that never had any brochures on display but the lads and staff were well travelled and really knew their stuff..... from Auntie.

Middlesbrough cz in laws used a small local independant for years until he retired, said he could trust him and always got what he said they would.

My parents used one in Durham to book the same type of trip we spoke about you specialised in.

Auntie I was kidding when I asked if the buyer still spoke to you. You told me long ago who it was bought it 👍

Daughter and son in law were due to go to a wedding party in a couple of weeks after the happy couple were getting we'd abroad, now cancelled due to this happening.  Shame for the folk left high and dry, even if you get money back. Re planning of a wedding takes time to book venues etc.

Thought it was 21000 worldwide of which 9000 in UK

That was the figure given yesterday, of which a 1000 work in Peterborough.

Interesting to see a growing campaign for repayment of the massive bonuses received by the bosses.

And when you consider they had the gall to ask for public money to support the dieing, out of date business!

I've often felt foreign holidays are too cheap to sustain a realistic profit compared to the size of the airlines and the huge amount of money tied up.

Well the worries that TJ's might go has come about - they've bit the dust and I rather hope this makes airlines up their prices to become more profitable and maybe that will lead to more holidays in this country - with a bit less pollution as a bonus.

TC were more than "an airline", that part of the business i understand did pay, its the buying the Co-oP travel business & funding high st shops that dragged it down, also the top Executives pay package, over paying themselves for running a failing company
