Duck pond

We do both on our shoot, as in feed a pond to pull in wild duck and this year for the first time we have ponds were we put down 100 duck. The duck we put down were exercised after a month which basically means you get them off with a dog and make sure they all get off and have a fly for 20 mins by using umbrellas to stop them plopping back on another pond. We have had 3 shoot days and they have flown well and add a different dimension to a predominantly pheasant shoot, so not a duck drive but a mix depending on pegs.

not expensive to set up just an auto feeder and a pallet island  on a pulley for feeding.

we only pull in wild duck when it gets colder and they find the food.tried call duck last year but they failed to pull in much so they are part of the birds we put down now with a fine if shot as they are white.

i did think the duck would also provide some sport for the beaters at the end of the season as they can clear the pond and get plenty of shooting at the end of the season.

HyFly and Jenkinson's in Lancashire have an exceptional network of ponds and bomb holes that they release many ducks on and manage to shoot the wholes season with good bags 2-3 times a week, with some of the cheapest and most sporting targets around.

If done properly it can be very successful.

It must be something good in the air arround here because we put 400 down on our ponds and have exellent shooting off them with some very testing birds. There is the odd lazy duck but let that go by and pick your shots!
