30-6
Seem to be reading a lot in the shooting mags about dry firing with an empty chamber can improve technique with rifle shooting, so why do they advocate using snap caps for a shotgun ? Westley
Possibly because a shotgun firing pins can be damaged by dry firing, due to construction and angle of travel, whereas a rifle is usually firing in a straight line, a bit like a semi auto. I have dry fired semi auto's without any problems.
mossy835
and if they stay out, you may have a job to open the gun.
London Best
Totally different mechanism, shotgun firing pins can be susceptible to cracking whereas a bolt action striker is a much more substantial job, often being the full length of the bolt. A double rifle would need snap caps.
Walker570
Doesn't hurt to put a fired case in the rifle anyway. Personally I cannot see the evidence that dry firing helps in any way. Trigger control is linked to what you can see down range and the result of the cartridge being fired and the impact of the bullet. To me live firing is by far the best and only practise of any real use, unless you are shooting a revolver and trying to stop someone snatching, then you can load both live and empty rounds at random(by someone else) and then aim and pull them through without snatching ..we referred to it as skip training. Just amazing how the hammer falling on an empty cartridge shows up a snatch and can educate the brain not to do it. I have never tried it but I suppose it could be done with a rifle if the instructor could load rounds without being seen by the shooter.
