What fac shotgun. Again!

Sorry for the usual questions!  I have a slot for a s1 and plan to fill it soon. I have a winchester sxp (non fac) which despite a couple of lessons on clays I cannot get on with. I think this is due to having a long neck and not being able to adjust/shim the drop. It will be for rooks in tall trees (steep sloped beach forests) pigeons on crops, squirrels. Some clay sessions possibly a go at practical (won't have time to do it regularly) general walk about pest control and also a bit of fun! My favourites at the moment are a benelli supernova with a 26 or 28 inch barrel or a stoeger semi m3500 if I can get one in uk. The stoeger m3k looks good but is only 24 inch barrel. I'm drawn towards the pump for safety and the semi for the speed. Barrel length I'm unsure about but thought longer is better for high birds. I'm 6' with long arms and long neck.  Probably most drawn to the supernova.  All advice or gentle abuse (I like camo guns) would be appreciated. High tree stuff is the priority. I think adjustable stock/shims are also a definite.  Can't afford the berretta I want!

Thanks in advance.

Id think hard about if you really need a fac shotgun  .

As if it doesnt fit you and you can hit owt and want to sell it on .they are extreemly difficult to sell onwards .not including the paperwork of course .

A 3 shot pump or semi is usually enough for most situations.

Thats my 2p worth

If you can find a AL391 Light with the proper 24” barrel then they are well worth having. Mate has one and it is the most practical little auto I’ve come across, and handles like a dream. Don’t worry about long barrels for high birds; those birds from the high tower traps at Westlands are easily and consistently reachable with that barrel. I would love one but already have two autos.

I thought on an open  ticket with conditions for clays,  pest control and practical i could use it anywhere I have permission? But I have been wrong about many things! There is an element of having one just because I can, and you can't really lose much on a £700 gun. Also there is the warranty. If you have a failure of a s/h gun you lose everything or have to pass on a pup which I would not. Much the same arguments against fac air, but mine whilst occasionally playing up and me having learned to service most of it has been night and day more effective than my sub 12.

If I am right you can only use it on approved ground just can’t take and use anywhere

I have FAC (Rifles) but no idea how you go on with shotguns what the conditions ussualy are. But you could not use it for Wildfowling or game without mag plug, any way.

You can rattle off a lot of shells fast, but they take longer to load, i still think a speedload (as in a free floor plate or 1100buton on floor plate , could shoot and load two continuous and put more rounds down range than a chap with an mag extension taking an age to fill it up.

All depends what you are using it for, personally for me waterfowl vermin game clays , i just can not see where i would need one ever.

I don't expect to get involved with water fowling. And there is an element of wants are usually more fun than needs. Would be a shame to have a slot and not use it.

It's like xmas. Needs don't count as presents. It's wants that make you smile. My wants will hopefully also do my needs.!

So I will probably take a punt on a supernova 26 in camo unless there is anything wrong with them.

Thanks for your answers and views.

I don't quite understand why they can't be used for waterfowl (I'm not disagreeing) is it a general license thing? I will have a good read in the pump club section.

Thanks again.

Your good reason is whatever you applied for, but I use mine as it is set out thus: it can be used for shooting birds in accordance with the purpose, terms and conditions of the general license currently issued by the appropriate authority under the provisions of The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
I use mine on any land on which I have permission to shoot.
If you want one, then get one. I really enjoy using mine.

Cheers scully, I think the fun element is often overlooked. I spent a day with friends in Cyprus years ago  with an unlimited amount of waste oranges a fishing catapult and a 7 +1 spas semi auto. Most excellent. Got through a heap of cartridges. I can't use clays over my permission so will probably try it with apples to get my eye in before embarrassing myself at the clay range.

Supernovas seem to be around £675 less whatever I get for my sxp so not ruinous. I like the bang. safe. element of a pump action.

It's probably wrong but my favorite target with a 308 is a 12p tin of Italian tomatoes @125 yards when hit with a 155g sp they cease to exist and after picking up the remainder of can you can't really see the mess. Unlike tins of spaghetti!

So worded like that, with a plug you could use it for waterfowling or game , as it would then comply with the 1981 act. It is a workable condition the way that is.

Afraid not. A S1 shotgun with a plug is still a S1 shotgun, and therefore prone to all the legislation relating to such.

OK , so you have to have a separate semi auto for wildfowl etc,  n  Looking at it that way only waterfowl you could use it on would be canadas given their status and within GL, yet plug restricted to comply with the 1981. ?.

Why do we have to dodge around these stupid laws, i wish i was born in 1945 the day the war ended, i would be old enough now to about dodge this next lot of ****. as it is we are set for another  20 or 30 years of **** and all to shoot a few bods. I dont know.  Sorry for going off on one scully but was talking to an old wildfowling mate yesterday, he looks like he is packing up when his licence runs out next year, he is on some medication he says he wont get a licence because of it, i do not know the ins and outs but its looking scetchey for him. 78 years old and a nicer bloke its hard too meet. Rant over sorry. carry on.

Get an escort cheap they work, and when you want to sell it on but struggle you wont loose as much money. as ultrastu says be sure you need one , if you can not live without one then Escort, you can get mag extensions and any spares you need easily.

I've got a FAC Escort Magnum. Originally a five shot but I converted it to an eight shot. It's never missed a beat, and as long as you keep the piston etc clean and use the correct length cartridges, it will be fine.
