Orkney Geese and the BBC.

Collectively, the BBC mandarins are well aware that that they have for years promoted a heavily left wing biased view of country sports, evidenced by their constant promotion of the likes of Packham et al.

With Left Wing politics destroyed at the last election and a Tory government that has openly stated that it intends to review the television licence and the BBC `s funding, the Beeb is backpeddaling like a thing posessed.

Out of the door hopefully?

Needs a serious sort out as has become unbalanced from salaries paid to policies pursued?

I dearly hope this is not wishful thinking? It’s about time the positives of wildlife and habitat management, pest/predator control and a true explanation of what genuine conservation is about, was used to honestly inform and educate the public! For too long they have been fed a diet of emotion based protectionist lies and propaganda....that has little or nothing to do with genuine scientifically based animal welfare measures, or real conversation.

Problem with the article is that it confuses resident birds and visitors, with Orkney only having circa 25,000 resident geese which is an increase but not the 68,000 wintering population that gets quoted.

Also fails to mention that the reason geese are now up there is the preponderance of winter grass which never used to be there as cold conditions/snow  meant no grazing through winter as they were spread over Scotland as far as areas such as Stranraer and Solway where milder climes allowed year round grass growth.

Farmers are now trying to make use of this 'bonus grass' and objecting to the birds eating/tramping it, hence the cull.

Bear in mind the population of Greylags is still quite small (even though it causes local issues) in that there is only 250,000 birds between the UK and Icelandic populations.
