And should your loved one need to go into care the "authorities " will do their best to avoid paying Continuing Healthcare Costs".

There are solicitors who will fight that for you. we ended up paying for my aunt but learned later from an AgeUK dementia advisor that she should have been entitled to funding. Nobody in authority, GP, social services etc wants to tell you that though.

We may have to go the solicitor no win no fee route.  We have just had to pay £25K to my Aunts local authority to cover her fees while we got court of protection in place. That is a right pain in the bum to sort out and I would highly recommend that you get power of attorney  in place before anything happens as it will save loads of aggro later.

Exactly the same situation with my grand parents on my mum's side.

They ended up in a home just over 3 years ago, where my grand father (stroke victim) passed away 7 weeks later. My Nan (dementia/azheimers)  passed away the week before Christmas at 93.

The home at Hadleigh, just off the round about by any chance?

My mum is in a home in Somerset

Very true, certainly well before they get a diagnosis of dementia, fortunately my mum was just mentally aware enough to allow us to get LPA and was diagnosed within a year of us getting it. There are lawyers who specialise in this and it is not too costly, around £250 iirc

I did think about starting a new thread on this but it might as well go here.

Turns out my other half has just become the 'Dementia Friend' rep at work (she works at a hospital) and will be delivering seminars about it. She's just used me as a guinea pig to practice on and I have to say it was very interesting. They do seem like a very worthwhile cause to increase awareness of some of the practicalities of dealing with it and suggesting approaches to supporting people living with dementia.

They are here: www.dementiafriends.org.uk

Did a training session on this with the RBL some weeks ago.   Very useful and informative.

It is isn't it? I was surprised actually as I thought I already knew more than I did. The examples and analogies they used struck quite a chord, especially the bits about short term memory of events going but the emotional memory remaining longer.
