Retsdon
I've just been diagnosed with BPH. But to be honest, I'm not entirely satisfied with either the physician or his diagnosis. So if any PW member has this condition I'd be very interested to hear the symptoms and the tests done to arrive at the diagnosis. In particular I'm curious about the time interval between there being nothing to even think about to the first visit to the doctor. I"v searched the internet but there's not a lot out there on the rate of symptomatic progression. I know this complaint is a little bit embarrassing so PMs would be absolutely fine. What I'm curious about is the timeline. Weeks? Months? Days? It goes without saying that any messages would be in strictest confidence. Thanks very much for any help. Dave-G
Got diagnosed several years ago - after telling doc I had issues with urine flow, he did a slightly embarrasing digital rectal examination (there and then) Its grown but smooth is normal, lumpy bumpy could be cancerous. Its basically that the prostrate expands with age - your uretha tube passes though it: Its expansion reduces the diameter of the hole therefore restricting the flow of urine. Got referred to a consultant - long story short - had to drink as much water as possible till ready to burst then wee into a bucket. Time taken to complete the process - including breaks in the flow, then a scan to check if the bladder is empty (it wasn't) confirmed the issue. Several treatments are possible, some surgical - but Tamsulosin was prescribed as a life long solution to avoid surgery. Process involved about 3 months before the NHS consultant appointment. Follow up appointment a few months later to establish if the medication/dosage has been satisfactory. What I'm most interested in is the timeline. In my case It was probably three weeks from no issues at all to visiting the quack. It seems a bit quick. Just now, Retsdon said: but Tamsulosin was prescribed as a life long solution to avoid surgery. I've been given Tamusolin and after 10 days it hasn't made the slightest difference. Dave-G
If I forget to take the med it can take three to four days to restrict the flow again - maybe it needs a bit longer - or a stronger dose - mine are 400 microgram capsules. johnphilip
Ok what tests have you had done , are they going to do any more tests . If it just enlarged and hard to pee , then be thankful that is al, it is . 6 years ago I was treated for prostate cancer , with the seed implant . It worked , I get my Psa done every 6 months the results are very good , so good that I dont think about it now , as said maybe it may take a little while for the tablets to work . Or maybe they can try you on something else . Hope everything gets sorted for you soon . I know it can be a scary time . We have to put our trust in the NHS . They did everything for me . It was my local GP who spotted my problem , I keep reminding her for been on the ball and getting me checked out , I had very few symptoms at the time . I was lucky it had not spread. Medic1281
Have you looked at prostatitis? (? Spelling), An infection or inflammation of the prostate. Can stop you urinating easily, causing your bladder to remain full. Easily treated if seen early enough.

This ^^^^^ But to add, not always easily treated- but if you are prescribed an anti biotic it may either be totally unsuitable or if it’s Cipro and it’s ilk- highly troublesome for tendons. Supposedly the only sure way for diagnosis is via a biopsy, which even privately, they seem loath to do Edited January 4, 2020 by Jaymo
GOLDCREST
Lived with BPH for about twenty years, on Tamsulosin for about ten years...Everything fine, flow good and no problems...until one day, quite suddenly I couldn't pee, It just stopped, just a cartoon drop, even though I was bursting to go...Anyway to cut a long story short I ended up in A&E and had a catheter fitted, What a relief......I had a waterworks infection, and was given the choice, Antibiotics or have it "bored out"...As this was the second time this had happened I opted for surgery.. Absolutely dreaded going into hospital, which was my first time in 69 years....But having lived with a catheter for 3 months until my turn came up, I was glad I did...The surgery was a complete NON event, even though I was awake throughout..I had an Epidural...I didn't even need a paracetamol afterwards and the staff were superb... ******* like a racehorse now...And touch wood, still going strong five years down the line.... Get it done pal...If I can do it so can you. Only down side, if it is a down side is you get what they call retrograde ejaculation..which means when you ejaculate the gissum goes backwards into the bladder and is peed out later... Grandalf
Had mine bored out some fifteen years ago. Was on Tamsulosin before that for about five years. When I retired at 65 I decided to go for the op. Now eighty years old and everything, I mean everything, still functions perfectly with a little bit of help from Viagra. Don't care which way the juice goes. The feeling is just the same. At my age I don't wish to make babies... Sometimes I get up for a pee in the night - Depends how many drinks I had the night before. The operation was no big drama.
