Brass vs Aluminium down a shotgun barrel

Morning all

I'm having a tinker, making myself something once the cogs get turning. I've not got much spare brass rod knocking around, and it aint cheap to buy, but a fair bit of aluminium. Does anyone know why the general preference is to use brass for cleaning rods etc? Alu is softer and not too difficult to machine, generally easier to get hold of and pretty cheap. So why Brass? Also, why not copper or bronze?

If I make my thingamijig out of alu, do I risk damage to the barrels?

Cheers

No! All the metals you mention are softer than the steel barrels!

Brilliant, cheers guys. The part I'm making needs to be strong-ish, but shouldn't interact with the barrel aide from glancing as it's pushed/pulled though.

I'll go with Alu for now as I have it on hand, it's only to hold a screw-in mop/brush like a normal pull-through.

Cheers
