Apparently the codes and flight plans should be shared with the units based near the airport allowing the operators to correlate each object on the radar with a flight plan and code. However the flight time of the missile for a 3 mile distant target is around 5 seconds and they have no method of diverting or detonation if they spot an error!

ive just been on flight radar checking what aircraft are coming into manchester, the site is free and available for anyone to use,it gives aircraft reg/heading/height/ type and to  an from destinations, mistakes like this should not happen.

OR a deliberate action because many of those on board spoke with American accents ..or close to...but happened to be Canadians.  The Iranian hieracy wouldn't blink at a few others being killed in the process.

If they wanted to kill Americans there are plenty of options in the Gulf before you arrive at speculatively firing on a Ukrainian airliner in case some of the Iranians on board had American accents.

If you download Flightradar 24 you can look at literally every single plane, helicopter and weather balloon in the sky over the whole globe. The only thing you cant see are military and it struggles on stuff under a few thousand feet. You can see Depature time and location, destination, heading, altitude, time in the air and aircraft type and carrier.

FlightRadar has a built in delay- stop naughty people seeing what’s coming their way and maybe carrying out some nefarious activity.

We use it a lot to see if we can have a few mins extra at the hotel or coffee at the Airports I tend to frequent

Aircrew haven't changed Jaymo.   I'm glad to say.

Seems that oowee hit the nail on the head when he asked why it was allowed to fly.   With the heightened tension in the area that was apparent and the threat and counter threats plus actual missiles being fired from Iran into Iraq, then the airspace should have been closed to all domestic and international air traffic.   If that was not the case, and it wasn't, then the airlines should have imposed their own ban.

Civil aircraft are not designed to operate in war zones.
