old'un Posted January 28, 2020 Report Share Posted January 28, 2020 (edited) One of the things I hate about football is how all the TV channels seem to think the whole country is interested in it, they even give it a slot on the news, telling us what the manager had for breakfast, how one of his players twisted an ankle and might miss the game, who’s being transferred to this or that club and on and on with stuff, I am not interested, its not news and the people who follow football/clubs already know all this, its not news, put it all on sky for those who are interested. Football ,in it's present form, isn't good for society. Bad role models and exploitation of the young. I have a pile of CVs to go through this morning and 10% of them will be from men who either have been in some form of football "apprenticeship" and been viewed as unprofitable at aged 14-16 or from the less talented who have done some form of sports "qualification" which went nowhere. The next stage will be interviews which contain the phrase "I love my football", "I'm Chelsea" or have a tale of being picked up by Watford/Luton/Yeovil/Gillingham for a few years then being called into a shed at the trainning ground and being told at aged 14/16 your dreams were over. No other industry would be allowed to recruit 9 year olds with the view of selling them on at a profit. A lot of parents should be ashamed of themselves. I work in Liverpool - the LFC Office is on three floors above us and everyone around me either supports Everton, Liverpool or Man United. Now that I'm (considerably) north of 30, I've given up pretending to be interested in football to help in social situations. Live and let live and so forth, but I can't see that this women's misguided dream of bosses trying to regulate the conversation in the break room as being anything other than a spectacular own-goal. Rant over. I fully agree. What I don't get is the assumption that women's football is in any way entertaining and therefore worthy of so much coverage. Skill levels are pitiful. It goes further than that of course, in that sports personalities are "celebrities". Whilst it was of course tragic that a US basketball player was killed in a helicopter accident, how in hell's name was it worthy of headline news over here? That is so true, they really do exploit the kids and their parents. For every one that makes it through the system another hundred will be ruthlessly cast aside.
