aberisle
The next time you get a sanctimonious Vega/Vegi criticising shooting or meat eating let them know about this. https://www.ecowatch.com/europes-dirty-little-secret-moroccan-slaves-and-a-sea-of-plastic-1882131257.html https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bqn4g1/mediterranean-with-simon-reeve-series-1-episode-4 It is an area of Spain that you can see from space that is full of plastic greenhouses just to provide the "ethical"Vegi's with food. Thanks for posting..Huge problems with salinisation due to irrigation globally, air miles and import duty, its all absolute lunacy, but hey we all now know that permanent pasture is the reason for our current global crisis. Below are references to Advocado production in Mexico but other countries are also finding that they cant afford to eat the staple food that they produce because of our demand for out of season produce has priced it out of their pockets.. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/aug/06/mexico-considers-importing-avocados-as-global-demand-drives-up-prices https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/aug/10/avocado-illegal-deforestation-mexico-pine-forests Edited February 3, 2020 by islandgun
DoolinDalton
This has just reinforced my reason why I grow my own fruit and veg. It's hard work (sometimes) but at least I know where it's from and how it's grown.
norfolk dumpling
Our meat production is carbon negative - it is the mass production Americas where feed is soya/maize sourced from land deforested or worked to extinction. Our beef and lamb is pasture and/or haylage-fed but with vegans and the likes of Packman so vociferous our Government are not brave enough to call them out. We need to actively support producers. Most beef finishing in the uk is cereal based, especially in arable areas, in order to grow fast enough for slaughter, all dairy cows are fed cereals for milk production, sheep are cereal fed (mostly the breeding flick to optimise birth rates) for winter maintenance..., etc. If you're not eating Highland cows or a similar traditional breed raised over longer time spans, cereals will be a large proportion of the diet. We worked our land and deforested it to extinction over the last few hundred years, why else would artifical fertiliser etc be required, Brazilians etc are just catching up.
