I have a  2018 BMW 320D M Sport Touring - it ticks all your boxes and is great to drive.

I find it a perfect balance between performance and economy and the automatic gearbox is absolutely brilliant.

Comfy, looks good, loads of room, full of tech, brilliant long distance cruiser with good fuel economy and great fun when using Sport mode and Either ‘S’ on the gearbox or paddles.

I would genuinely, highly recommend. 330/335 would be even better to drive...

All the best with your decision,

Dave 👍

Very good economy but too small and a limp image. 5 series is ok.

I would look at the volvo xc range.

Ran a 330d for a long time - Very quick and surprisingly good on the fuel. Switched to a 116d - I no longer needed a big car and the bulk of my millage (30K pa) is me alone. I did not miss the power though I always think I should have got a 118d. I would look at a 320d x drive over a 330d. You will save a bit and miss very little. P.S. For an hour or so the Malamute will happily sit in the 116d boot.

I need help deciding on a new motor. We have the baby on the way so I need to change by the end of June.

Must be;

No more than 4 years old.

Good on fuel (120 miles a day commute)

Automatic

Decent inside seen as I spend a couple of hours a day sat there.

Decent power 190bhp+. I’m going from 400~ish 😢.

4wd would be a plus but not essential.

Big enough for dog, baby and stuff for a week away.

Budget 15-20k.

I would definitely recommend an F31 model BMW 320d Touring. 45/50 mpg, handles well, plenty of power.
I’m on my 2nd one. I had a 2014 and have recently replaced it with a 2017 exactly the same.
you can get an X-drive if you need 4x4. They sit fractionally higher and have a worse turning circle but other than that very similar.

I might be about to make a terrible decision or one that will pay off. The brother in law is selling his 2014 Range Rover vogue autobiography. Just been serviced like new inside and out even though it has 90k on the clock. All motorway miles. Says I can have it for 25k. It’s never caused him any issues.........so far. Bad idea? As a side note we are going from 2 cars down to 1 if we go for this. If I start working from the office again I would maybe get a little run around for the commute.

That sounds like a nice vehicle, no idea of the value as unfortunately they loose it fast but I think the autobiography holds a bit more. Although at that price it's top money for the year. Having recently bought one but not the autobiography it's so far over what I would have expected. Once you've had a Range Rover Vogue you'll be spoilt and not want anything else. Absolute luxury and style. Not as expensive to run as people think either.

Good to know they aren’t as expensive to run as people think. I couldn’t find an autobiography of the same year for anything less than 28.5k on  autotrader. The one at that price had a few more miles on the clock.

Check out the cost and regularity of servicing to make sure its in your budget. LR parts and servicing are generally quite high and problems start when you skip due dates.

Servicing should be cheaper than the BMW I have now with a local land rover specialist. All services so far have been carried out by Land Rover and done before they were due. If it had 30k less on the clock I wouldn’t even be thinking twice, it’s just 90k.....

Fortunately 90k is nothing for these vehicles. I'm sure I read somewhere the engines are designed to run at least 250.000 miles without a rebuild. If that's true, work out how many more years/miles you have left in it. I would say run it till 200.000 to 225.000 then think about moving it on. In my case (also with two vehicles) that equates at about 32 - 35 years at it's current mileage 🤣

As long as its had its regular servicing done and nothing skipped I would think you would be fine with it.

If in doubt for the sake of a few pounds have an independent inspection carried out by a reputable company, a report written and then make a judgement.

You can buy fantastic motors in any marque, same as you can buy absolute dogs. You'll never really know till you've had it a few months.

Ive just popped proper offf road tyres on mine whilst retaining its road tyres in my garage. I can now reasonably expect to get anywhere and back when I'm out shooting without worry of damage or getting stuck.

Good to know thank you.If I go for it I’m thinking of taking a warranty out which covers absolutely everything which will cost about £900 for the year. Cheaper than I thought it would be

I think some companies do a bumper to bumper warranty which is well worth the investment for your sort of money.

Everyone has teething problems with a new motor. When I bought my Volvo new in 2016 it had to go back several times for computer faults and a "module".

My Range Rover has a warning light on that doesn't go out, but everything works fine and there's no fault code. Previous owner from new never had it. Fortunately its covered by warranty and is going in later this week for a diagnostic check again. Worrying, yes, but less so knowing its prepaid.

Which company are you using for the warranty? The quote I have is from motoreasy for their top cover.
