Barrel cammo

Afternoon all, just wondering how people have added some sort of cammo to their barrels to stop the glare on sunny days? Cheers

I have never found it a problem. I have had more trouble with guests who are unable to sit still in the hide and resist the urge to keep bobbing up and down for a 'look'  !  Movement is the one thing that puts pigeons off more than anything else.

After seeing a mates barrels flashing every time he mounted the gun across the field, I bought a stretchy camo one off the bay. It fitted the whole gun and I just cut off enough to fit the barrels, and used the other piece to protect the stock from scratches. I can't find the same one now, tried neoprene but nowhere near as good. I only use it when it's bright sun but I got definately less "flare offs".

Gentlemen

If you stay still and mount the gun in a fluid movement and shoot there is no need to camouflage your barrels.

You are hiding from Woodpigeons, not snipers!

Both spot on answers.

Thanks everyone and take everything on board; cheers.

I would have considered I move in a smooth calm manner without jerking but I'm well covered and rub mud on the back of my hands if I'm not wearing gloves so I've put it down to the barrels shining above the movement issues and suppose for the price of a roll of tape it must be worth a try, would still be interested in any other suggestions in case we have a nice summer!!!

not somthing ive ever felt i need, but if i was gona camo a gun or any piece of gear id use vet wrap.  you can get it in most colours like olive or black may even do a camo version. its basically that stuff they put round horse ankles.  a rubberised bandage that clings to itself and not what you wrap. also offers a bit of protection to whatever it wraps. however it might retain water so ill take it of now and then to make sure stuffs not rusting.

Be careful as to which tape that you buy, I once had a problem with the arms of a magnet 'flashing' as it turned, in bright sunlight. I bought some cammo tape off fleabay and it turned out to be more glossy than the paint on the magnet. I ended up searching in the shed to find some of the old black cloth insulation tape, that sorted it.

Put some mud on your barrels :whistling:……sorry I cannot agree with your train of thought,

First how are the pigeons seeing your barrels?

I'm assuming ( the root of all evils I know ) it's my barrels but for sure they are spotting me in some way or another especially when sunny

what type of net do you use?

When in your hide you should not have any sun on you, you should be in the shadows, also if the sun is behind you make sure you have good back cover.

All my gear is old I have to admit, it's an old army surplus net and I usually use the hedge as my back cover. . . . I have no problem buying a new net/hide but the choices are huge and I'm overwhelmed.. . . Maybe someone can advise on a lightweight/quality option as I walk with my gear? Cheers

We had a member on here many moons ago where he recon his cable from the magnet to the battery was glinting in the sun so that got taped as well as all his other bits and pieces and I think that included his dog

Have you tried setting up your decoys ect and then walk out and look back at your hide to see if you can spot anything that you think might put the pigeons off from committing ?, if they are flaring off it would be more than likely something they have noticed with your set up rather than spotting something in your hide ,

I have just seen your last post about nets , the two I use the most are from A 1 Decoys , I believe they are 5 meters long by 1 1/2 meters high , 3 ply , one is a dark pattern and the other is a lighter shade , both are very light and the two on top of each other is all you will need , if you going to buy a couple , buy the longer ones and go for the three ply ones rather than the clear or 1 or 2 ply

Much easier to get someone else to.

A couple of years ago I was set up next to the A47 with my son.

A friend that knew roughly where we would be sat at traffic lights and phoned to say he could not see either of us. But that the hide was too light in colour for the surroundings!

I thanked him for his time and we continued to shoot woodpigeons!

All this reminds me of the (on the Fly Fishing Forum) tale of the friend who had a mate who had a friend who was big into his fly fishing. But reckoned that the glossy varnish finish on his top range carbon fibre rod flashed in the sun and put off the trout. So he decided to "stealth" his rod having seen the reports of the then new US Stealth Fighter and its matte black finish. And he knew that as carbon was black all he needed to do was sand down his rod to the bare carbon. The rest as they say I'll leave to your imagination. Safe to say after the sanding the first time he used his rod it broke as he'd sanded most all of it paint, varnish, carbon fibre and all onto the floor of his shed.

I thought the same with the reflection from my u/o, to the point I went and bought a Hatsan escort camo, which is now back in the cupboard not getting used didn’t make a difference as far as I could see, I have gone back to the u/o, and have subsequently had some good days. I now think that the choice of pattern shape position etc, floater or rotary or not we’re the largest issues along with the wind, hide position and flight lines. I think I’m also better at keeping still choosing the moment to move now.

It doesn’t always work out but I’ve satisfied myself that it’s not the gun that’s the problem.

Hi all, I have the end to the thread!!!

As someone who naturally likes to educate myself, I bought some non adhesive cammo tape online ( £1.95 per roll or £1.99 for three ( work that one out if you can )) I was very impressed about the feel and was 100% non sticky so sat and put it on the barrels and felt pretty chuffed with the look. . . . I was due out yesterday so packed the car and off I went, picked up my mate and told him about the new tape en-route. . . . We set-up our stall and got my gun out from it's sleeve and by putting it in and taking it out once the tape had rolled and folded and was covered in the fleece lining from my slip. . . . my mate fell about laughing and I had to do the same in all honesty. . .nothing ventured/nothing gained but thought I'd share the story non the less ( hope you enjoyed the read ) !!
