fatchap Posted April 1, 2020 Report Share Posted April 1, 2020 (edited) Well boredom got the better of me and I decided to sacrifice a tenon saw and started on a filleting knife, Lost all track of time and got quite a bit done, I found a Juma block which I didn't know I had, thats the handle sorted, after a rummage I found some bits of Nickel and some small bits of blue liner. I had a rough idea of what I wanted but as usual ended up winging it. Hell of a job getting a 2mm slot in the nickel finger guard, Had quite a few cups of coffee and roll ups while I came up with a campaign. In the end a line of 2mm holes then the smallest dremmel grinding disc I could find and slowly ground them into a slot. Unfortunately the slot got bigger and now the tang is too small, but I had a think and came up with a cunning plan, I ground the edges of the slot so I could get some dyed resin in there to fill the gap and hopefully look a bit decorative and not draw your eye. Lots of shaping and sanding its at 400 grit at the moment but tomorrow when I attach the butt end, will probably copy the front in reverse juma, stainless, liners, nickel cap. I can then shape these to the contours of the handle, give it a good sanding up to 1000 grit, and polish the granny out of it. Just hope I have enough bits and pieces to finish it. One mistake and it'll be game over. The blade is nice and flexible, bends back and forwards lovely with no sign of staying bent. As its from a saw blade it didn't need hardening obviously, Just hope I can get an edge on it, filleting knives are laser sharp. Its looking a bit scruffy at the moment but its work in progress . fatchap Posted April 2, 2020 Author Report Share Posted April 2, 2020 Hopefully will be finishing it today. Its for Kingslakes down in Devon. Their chef wanted a new filleting knife and as I make the knives for the tackle shop, he asked me to make one. Sadly just got an email telling me kingslakes has had to close due to the current situation and its best if I don't make anymore knives until further notice. Anyone want a filleting knife? That point of filling the gap...hate to mention it....but with a suitable waterproof filler then would not that be a far better practical idea for fitting blades, so preventing ny water etc getting in there ?? Haven't filled the gap yet, so yep thats a good idea, any luck it will take pigment and I can keep with my original plan of blue. Very pleased with the scale effect in the resin. Not sure at the moment I have got an edge on it but its not sharp sharp. Trouble is the blade being quite flexible as a filleting knife is supposed to be dosn't work in the lansky sharpening system I have the blade bends. Plan B tomorrow. I didn't, I bought that block ages ago and forgot I had it, when it arrived if I remember it was just a blue block. When I used it and started cutting it and sanding it down I noticed the scale pattern which I thought was quite apt being as I was making a fish filleting knife.
