The Heron
So sir Kier Starmer has been elected as the new Labour leader his first plan as part of a ten part plan is to increase the income tax on the top 5% of the country, nothing changes you could elect a dog to lead that party. harkom
It may well happen that in order to pay off the Corona virus spend by government that every tax payer will be making larger contributions to HMRC to underwrite the debt?

Well the government will certainly need to build up reserves! Makes you wonder if big infrastructure projects like HS2 will be put on ice, indefinitely? They will find new ways to get the money to do this.........who knows that might even mean closing tax avoidance loopholes and ultimately lead to a fairer society? Tax 'loopholes' are difficult to close. No party wants them - which is why they are 'loopholes' - but they are very difficult to close - not least because our taxation system is ridiculously complicated - for example Tolley's Yellow Tax Guide (the standard book used by accountants with all the details of the tax rules) was 6 volumes containing over 21,000 pages in 2018/9. It gets bigger every year - and in a set of 'rules' that big - no wonder clever (and very well paid) minds can fins loopholes. As to 'a fairer society' - again all parties want this - but have different interpretations. Some on the left for example believe that heavy state regulation with high taxation on earnings and a very generous and unrestricted benefits system distributing to those who earn less/nothing is fairer. Others - more on the right believe that rewarding hard work well is a fair system, and there is little place for 'free loaders' in a fair system - though would support the genuinely needy. She was interviewed this morning and was saying people must be allowed to go in parks and open spaces to sunbathe (!!!) ....... and it was OK for those like Matt Hancock in 'big houses' to say you can't. You are only allowed to go for exercise - when was sunbathing exercise? What is not clear? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8188953/Labours-new-deputy-leader-Angela-Rayner-blasts-Matt-Hancock.html
