The Labour MP and mayor  of Heanor in Derbyshire Shelia Oakes has said Boris Johnson has got what he deserves by having Corona virus, what a dispicable vile woman. I have tried putting a link to the Nottingham live news but can't do it.

What a horrible childish thing to say, she has to have something wrong with her head.

Nasty piece of dirt.

I have experienced the nastiness of the Labour left (trots) so I suppose it shouldn’t come as a surprise!

I just don’t get this Labour hatred of the Conservatives. Is it the burning resentment they have for what they perceive to be the privileged upper classes? It can’t be the jealousy of wealth because there are many champagne socialists with an equally unfathomable chip on their shoulders, and there are more than a few former labour politicians whom have become everything they claim to resent about privileged tories.

Just today my OH was having a rant about a good friend of hers who has made masks, at her own expense, for those who need them.  She is a self employed jeweller who doesn’t need to rely on her own work for a living as her husband flies all over the world conducting business for some high brow company he works for, and is paid accordingly. She herself comes from a wealthy and privileged background, but had told my OH that she would stop making masks if she thought ‘ that ******* Boris’ was going to benefit from one!
OH was really annoyed. What is wrong with people?

I dont know what is wrong with them, but its clearly well engrained in the labour party, not saying they all have the strange attitude but its certainly prevalent.

Many dare i say "RIGHT THINKING" (not re Right wing) Labour MPS/ members must be in despair of this seemingly endemic problem in their once popular party.

Starmer or the king of siam have a heck of a lot of ground to make up to get any kind of political headway with this floundering thrashing mortally wounded mount. I think the labour party has a long walk carnying the saddle before they even if ever get to sit on any kind of steed again in British politics.

It's been fashionable since the Blair years to HATE (the capital letters are important) the Tories. It was sold to the populace as the 'right' thing to do, around the same time that politics became about emotional reaction rather than reasoned debate. It capitalised on the 'uncaring' Thatcher years that still were a bitter memory for most of the electoral pool. (for what it's worth I think history will judge her more kindly than her contemporary population)

I am (just) old enough to remember policy being discussed and debated as reasoned opinion accross both sides of the bench (not to say it didn't get heated!). From the mid/late 90's politicians of all stripes realised that public engagement worked really well when you got the populace emotionaly involved. This tends to limit critical thinking, but who cares if it gets them to the ballot box?

Unfortunately to carry that on you need to keep up the emotional intensity, so now politics are fully polarised and have been for so long with extreme language being so commonplace it spills out in unexpected places. I wasn't surprised that the mayor in question looks (relatively) young, the only politics she knows is one of deep visceral emotion. I can't comprehend a mayor 25 years ago making such an idiotic statement, some may have thought it, but unlikely to have expressed it even in the darkest, smokiest corner of the club.

There also seems to be growing intolerance of any dissention from the 'right' think for your side. You must toe the line on all issues or your entire argument is now invalid. You can no longer be a Labour supporter but think the Tories may have a point on revamping local authorities or a Tory and think Labour have a point on additional support for renters. You have to be all or nothing and to make sure you are never questioned it's a good idea to double down on the right think. This becomes a perfect storm as everyone rushes to out do each other to 'prove' their loyalty.

Personally I would like to see a return to politics of reason, where the starting point is that other side may have a point so let's argue (in the purest sense) it out and see where we get to rather than the other side is evil/ incompetent so #nodebate.

Yeah that turned into a bit of a rant.... 😆
