Interesting times in years gone by. Wonder what it will be like in years to come ? I remember also starling and house sparrow used to be legal too.

Don’t get me on about starlings and sparrows. We all cut our teeth on those as airgunning kids. I have an old Shooter’s Year Book somewhere which records me having shot 837 sparrows one year alone, in our own semi-detached housing estate garden. My best afternoon was 66 starlings with the air gun.

During the mid 60's F&M epidemic we were given 9 shot shells by the farmers and told to roost shoot the starlings on the marshes as they were considered the cause of the spread,

Great to hear the stories of yesteryear.  As a kid we used to catch sparrows in mousetraps. Used to be thousands on the housing estates along with starlings. You should write a book.

Rudd

We were on a trip in Staffordshire last year with my sister and came across a little fishing pond, we started pond dipping with their cane handled net. My oldest two boys (then aged 4 & 2) saw the fishermen and wanted to have a go catching with a line themselves. I quickly made a rod from a twiggy reed, found some cast off old line and hook, then begged a handful of sweetcorn from another angler. My boys loved it and together caught and released 42 Rudd, I gave them no instruction it just came naturally to them even striking when they felt a nibble.

Can't really add to the brilliant photos that have already been posted , the only thing I have got left that might be of interest is the decoys used at the time when we shot Curlew ( Lew) as we called them , and a very early Pigeon decoy that is made of nearly solid rubber .

hello, thats a mighty big Conger :good:

It was and on a cane rod it weighed in at over 60lb the scale only went up that far

I remember the day that he caught it vividly

it was the day of my youngest brother’s christening a joint affair with two of my cousins being christened at the same time so a big family event

the tides And weather were good on the day and he and My uncle decided that they would go fishing and leave us to the religious stuff

I remember being most disappointed that I couldn’t go fishing and had to attend church with the rest of the family members 103 of us it should have been 105

when they returned with the fish I was devastated as I was convinced I would have caught it

I was never sure how much grief my uncle got for not attending his daughters christening but to see the fish caught il say it was worth it

All the best
