As above, I'm wanting to buy a new rod for spinning from the rocks for Pollack, my old flattie rod is getting a bit past it,  wondering about a carp rod say 11ft needs to throw 30g lures to the horizon, prefer tippy and light coupled to a shimano xt 5000 and 18lb braid. never held a carp rod !  any suggestions ?

I use a cheap carp rod for my sea spinning and flattie bashing but I'll be honest and say the 11ft length is a pain when scrambling on ledges trying to find somewhere decent to cast with a cliff face behind you.

What I will say it was excellent for float fishing for wrasse as the rods backbone was good for dragging it away from its holes when they bolt straight away.

If your coast is as sheer as I'm used to I'd buy a 9-10ft, only because its easier to cast. Don't get a spod rod, no feeling in the blank.

cheers all, I like the longer length as it helps keep them out of the kelp at my feet, my old rod is 10ft and seems a bit short sometimes. whats a spod ? .......was looking at 11ft version !

About 1/2-1lb

Basically a rod to throw bait out. Big meaty and heavy rods.

cheers, so what lb test curve, im guessing a 3lb would lob a 1lb spod... im looking for distance with 30g so would a lighter test curve be more suitable

You maybe want to give a carp rod a bit more varnish on the rings if you’re using it a lot in the sea unless you’re a very meticulous person and ultra clean it after use 😗

Mines 2.1/2lb and Ive blasted out a 3oz weight and 3 feathers after mackerel. Mines a cheap sub £50 carp rod, its a little bit floppy as its cheap, but ive abused the hell out of it over the years. I'll probably get a new one when I get a car, as its a bit expensive for a 3 hour round trip to Chesil beach in the xtrail

To the OP....

For any type of lure fishing you need a rod with a bit of tip action, so basically a rod designed for lure fishing. Sold all my lure fishing tackle years ago and have been out of the loop so can't recommend any rods in particular, but Shimano used to do some great lure rods. I'm sure there are specialist sea fishing lure rods available,,,, so might be best to go in that direction 😉

If you can't get a definitive answer on here, perhaps join an angling forum ?

Sorry can't help more than that.

I use an old John Wilson masterline pike rod 2 3/4 lbs test curve, it came with a fractured tip which I cut off, it shortened the rod to 10 1/2 feet. I re rung it and matched to to a penn spinfisher 5500LC this set up cast to the horizon when the mackeral are in with a 2oz bomb and really turns heads with a full string, most of the time I am chasing bass with redgills or tsunami sandeels and it performs great.

Go for the carp rod there are a lot of bargains out there.

Use a 2.25 tc shimano solstace carp rod for salmon,,regularly chucking 60/80 even 100 gram weights on the river moy worm fishing,,,have a 3lb Tc find it way to stiff for anything bought off ebay as I wanted the reel that was on it,,,,all my salmon gear is ex carp off the bay,,,Carp men like new shiny stuff every year,,and let's face it they cast out put in on a rod rest they never abuse any tackle..

Should have piped up earlier! I'd definitely look at a dedicated spinning rod. Lumping a lure out is all very well, but you'll get more feel out of a proper rod. Plenty of options to choose from.

10ft Nomura Kanji would definitely be worth a look at. Uncomplicated rods, but will give you more finesse than an an ox-cart of a carp rod!

Or for a bit more money (shop around though!) there's the Penn Rampage II Bass

I have a couple of Rampage II boat rods and they're great rods. What's nice about the Bass rod is a good long handle that gives a lot extra pivoting and thus power in the cast. Also come in a cordura tube, which is a nice touch

perfect. Although, I secretly hate you as I'm now looking at new lure rods. Can't even use it! I've got a fin nor 4-8lb class boat rod sitting waiting to be christened too. Cursed lockdown!
