It's the same with Ligustrum (Privet). Walk by any overgrown garden, especially in London streets, when this plant is in flower and the most wonderful smell will emanate. Regularly pruned hedges of the stuff never get the chance to flower.

i have a lot of privet...............and i dread the time of year when it gets long and flowers..........i think it is the most thick and cloying scent i have ever smelt...it locks my chest up....as do the smell of lily's in the house.........very strange...............yet other cut flowers i love to have in the house.....

Not far from my house is a long hedge that rarelyΒ gets cut by the Council, I love that smell when it flowers full of creamy white small flowers, forΒ me it's aroma is sweet with a slight bitterness. Unfortunately for theΒ allergic rhinitis (hey fever) sufferers it can be the very Devil.Β
