I don't think it hurts to ever have another option, + a fresh perspective on things can't be bad either?

No harm in being optimistic 😊👍

👍 I’m all for being optimistic, but the OP was looking for one which was more effective than the ones we currently have. There won’t be one, whether we have five or fifty five.

I set the bar low by limiting the scope of what I want: 'Good insurance, good advice and a little help with certificates should the worst happen'

I'm not looking for an org' that will share all my views/interests and lobby for them.

I'm looking for one that won't ask for lots of money, then use than money to actively lobby against my interests.

So far the suggestions have been:

CPSA - £51

Neutral - Not part of the lead ban folly, but not against it either

Cons - May become disinterested when a game/pigeon shooter falls into difficulty with the police.

Scottish Association for Country Sports (SACS) - £43

Pros - sounds helpful on firearms licensing matters, see: https://www.sacs.org.uk/membership/firearms-licensing

Cons - Part of the lead bad folly

Scottish Gamekeepers Association - £40

Pros - Against the lead ban folly, see https://news.scottishgamekeepers.co.uk/2020/02/the-sga-and-lead-shot.html

Cons - Seems to be a smaller and more niche organisation. If the worst happened, how much assistance on licencing could one really expect?

Country Cover Club - £32

Pros - Insurance only, no lead ban folly or other lobbying to worry about.

'Free Consultation with Specialist Shotgun, Firearms, Explosives and Licence Revocation Solicitor'.

'24-Hour Revocation of Licence and Legal Advice Helpline'

Cons -  ?

for Reference, BASC membership is £82

SACS I am with until December 2020. But after that it is the CPSA where I'll be going.

Why? SACS were part of the lead ban folly...then after shooters started to "kick off" claimed  that they had been "not been fully informed".

Well in my book if you fail to do due diligence then you've none but yourself to blame for the consequences you've brought upon yourself!

Just as in the story of Henny Penny, Cockey Lockey, Goosey Loosey and all that followed after Chicken Licken?

Did NOT ONE of those organisations that now say they were misled by BASC seek to pick up the telephone? How difficult would that be?

To one, some, any, all of the cartridge loaders in the UK and ask before they signed off on BASC's announcement? Asking "Is this true?"

Or do (that now claim being misled) usually get onto the bus without asking to be informed by the driver where it's going to take them?

All good points. The secrecy of it all is the worst part.

I don't expect perfection, just not so many own goals. Like i said good insurance, good advice and a little help on certificates should the worst happen. I can do without the politics for now.

Sorry didnt mean to quote politics about basc, just worth checking the excess on other groups insurance in the small print sometimes its cheaper for a reason .

Understandable, no need to apologise. I couldn't ask simply question without expecting being questioned in turn. I couldn't expect to state my reasons without others wishing to state theirs.

I will check the excess at some point. For insurance alone, I doubt the BASC offers good value at £82.

Just get the insurance from the country cover club, same insurance without the bull and marketing and you'll be sure that they won't suggest any further encroachment on your freedoms as some form of appeasement. They'll also fight any knee jerk legislation just as successfully.

It won't cover you for humane dispatch by the roadside, but that's a bit specialist and isn't covered by the insurance offered by basc anyway.

best answer so far, I sense we are aligned on this matter.

Although a Life member of BASC, I too sometimes wish they were a bit more robust with issues like Doctors letters and some Police Forces constantly moving the goal posts. I am still not convinced over the lead issue either. My domestic water is still supplied through lead pipes, my BASC magazine tells me of THREE wild geese being found in poor health having ingested lead shot. It did not seem to affect the remaining 30,000 that visited the same area  ?  I know of 2 people, now both in their eighties, who had been shot many years ago. Both are still carrying lead shot in their bodies with no ill effects. It does seem that we are using the lead shot debate, to better the use of shot game and it's sale. Simple answer, IF you can not consume what you shoot, then do NOT damn well shoot it  !

There was a similar thread over on the Stalking Directory a few weeks ago and on the strength of that I joined the Scottish Gamekeepers Association..... and I’m bloody glad I did!

What a breath of fresh air the magazine is.... well written, no nonsense, solid science articles.

I haven’t been in BASC for years now having gone to the NGO instead....so that’s me in the NGO, the BDS, Songbird Survival (another science based organisation) and now the SGA.

cheers

I’m a member also, but they don’t offer shooting insurance!

I joined as I was totally hacked off with the General Licence fiasco last year.

That and the rspb et al attitude that raptors rule and their blinkered attitude that the small birds were just cannon fodder. Grrrrr.

I’ve always been for the underdog.

Don’t start me on corvids ..... (****.....auto-incorrect just changed that to corgis! )
Some of these people have never seen what they can do to birthing sheep and lambs....

cheers

I sort of hope recent times with the doctor notes and the lead phasing out announcement the BASC get the shake up they deserve, and actually listen to its members. Because if not they might not survive and I’m not sure lots of little orgs are can carry much weight in important issues.

The government and those in power don't listen to them. They're all toothless and have sold their members down the river.

They have became political, make lots of noise and nothing we want happens.

CPSA are no different.

What a shame we can't get affiliate membership of the NRA!

I wish we could get only one big organisation with enough clout to fight for us no mater what you shoot, also like to see being a member compulsory as part of gun ownership, we need more power!   Jim.

That would be dearer than the licence and doctors fee combined, and you'd still get nowhere.

didn't the CPSA try to change the name to Clay Target Shooting Association because they did not want to be associated with shooting game??

I believe you are correct! They apparently, wished to disassociate clay shooting from live quarry shooting!........so given their past position, as the proposed lead phaseout does not (if I’m correct?) affect clay shooting (yet!) why would they be bothered?

I like the sound of those people. I am also hacked off by the obsession with Raptors and other avian predators. No one seems to care about the small guys. When you can walk out and raptors seem two a penny and something like a yellow hammer is extremely rare, something is going wrong.
