Knife Makers - Help Required

Recommended Posts

One very old sheath knife.   Been heavily abused on gardening duties.   What should I use to clean up the blade before sharpening?

Thanks.

Right - Thanks for that.   I will see how I get on myself.   It's not a special knife but I have had it a long time.

I took an old machete to the belt sander first, then wire wool to finish before sharpening. Still a fair amount of pitting but it gives it character after a good oiling

If you have a belt grinder i recommend scothbrite surface conditioning belts, if you don't have one I would be happy to do it for you?

You are all very kind but I will have a go myself.

Don't have any of the 'gear' so it will be a hands on job.

Wire wool OOOO grade if you have it and a heavy oil, motor oil is best but baby oil also works at a pinch. Then elbow grease. You will be amazed how well it works.
