Certainly one benefit of this corvid lockdown is that our County Council have not mown the village verges to urbanise them, and consequently they are a joy, covered in wild flowers which are alive with insects and bees.  Will speak with my County Councillor who lives in the village to see if this can be the regime for future years, then mow end of October ish to tidy up and spread the seed.

living on a lane that only gets mowed two times a year - there are drawbacks to it - as @oldypigeonpopper points out about fly tipping - people seem more prone to dump into the weeds/nettles/wild plants. Our neighbor and I have kept the verges on the fronts of our properties mowed for the past 15 years. However we are partway through having our lane surfaced (something that we didn't want done!) and kerbs put in - again something we didn't want done - under the safer routes to schools scheme - and the verge across from the house is now un-mowable because of the amount of rubble in there and the only thing growing is weeds - these will have an impact on our front gardens so it looks like going forward I will be out strimming to try and keep it under control.

When this is all over, I am also applying to the council for a name change for the lane, to Brands Hatch or Silverstone - because as I predicted and warned them about before they started - we have cars and vans hitting 60 miles per hour going up it. There answer - we will put a speed limit sign up - my response was "who will police it". They could have easily built in traffic calming for not much extra rather than having to retrofit afterwards which usually is a botch job.

Sorry about the rant!!

A big benefit for me is being able to pull out onto the A66 without waiting for about ten minutes, or risking life and limb to do so. It’s great!

I feel for you Scully,  I have traveled the A66 countless times up to my brother in laws in Newcastle. The speed some travel along (myself not included :whistling:) that road and have seen how precarious it can be joining it. Sometimes the traffic can be bloomin miles long.

🙂 It desperately needs dualling, and is supposed to be happening, but they’ve been telling us that for years.

The miles long tail backs are common, and can occur anywhere, but especially at ‘change over’ day ( Friday ) at Center Parcs near  Penrith.

Well when they dualled the A590 in places it totally transformed that road, obviously it costs money but it makes that journey much much better.

And the M6 was still quiet today.

Community Speed Watch is a scheme to allow volunteers to monitor the speed of passing vehicles using a hand-held speed detection device. The volunteers record the details of vehicles which are exceeding the speed limit by around 10%.
The information is apparently forwarded to the police and they send a letter to the drivers who are recorded as exceeding the speed limit.
Hope this is useful....I am thinking of doing it myself (once this pandemic is over), as there is a problem (imo) with 'clowns' who think that our avenue is a main road!

My wife has encountered these a few months ago, and received a letter in the post. The trouble is that our lane goes up to a dead end, with 5 houses further up at the top, so most of the people (excluding couriers) doing it are either them, or their friends/relatives. That will go down nice. It will also mean that we would have to dedicate our time to policing something that could have been avoided if the council weren't so up themselves and actually listened to people. as you can see from the picture below, we don't have much traffic (this is google maps before the work was done)

I think that perhaps sending a letter to each neighbour proposing the change of name (or something to that effect in Welsh :) of which I am not) might hit it home.

It is ironic that this was done under the "Safer Route to Schools" scheme from the Welsh Assembly - and the have ended up making the road more dangerous the half of the lane that we are on is single track - the bottom part is just wide enough for two medium cars to scrape past and they have deemed it a shared surface lane.

Rant part 2 finished!!!
