pegasus bridge
I looked in my junk folder yesterday and I had a raft of emails starting 24th April, detailing an old password I used on here and suggesting they had my ‘naughty’ browsing history from my laptop and would publish it to my friends in 24 hours unless I paid £2k in bitxoin! now I didn’t take it seriously because I’ve defintley not been browsing naughty websites 🤥 and defintley not on a laptop (i only use my phone). but the intriguing thing was the password ... they did have it , I went back through records and I have only used it on PW, I also checked each stored password on my phone (all 150+) and it’s only been used here... I’ve changed it now just in case.. but I’m very curious as to how they have got it. any ideas PW massive ?
Zapp
Itll mean an account on a site or app you've used has been hacked and your details sold. Its happened to me too. Go on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and you can find out which site the breach was on. Obviously change that password if you're using it still anywhere. I’ve used it before (saying no) but I have just checked it again, saying 7 ‘breaches’ now, but the password was literally only used on PW ! Zapp
Its usually apps that get breached. Fitness trackers, social media apps on smartphones etc.

Password that I used fifteen years ago to buy a length of garden hose. I hope they enjoyed watching the video of me doing naughty things whilst watching porn. I'm 81 and don't have a camera on my computer set up. Clever blokes these fellows. God knows what a bit coin is...
simonm
These scams are common - they use a password they’ve bought from hackers selling lists of passwords from compromised sites, in an attempt to convince you have indeed been recorded watching mucky films or whatever. Cranfield
I tried https://haveibeenpwned.com/ some long time ago, I think they are more concerned about selling you their secure password system than giving you any useful information. I never worked out how to find which site allegedly breached my password, unless I subscribed. I even made up email addresses and they had all allegedly been breached. The fact that it was in your Junk Folder by default tells you all you need to know - it is known spam and your ISP has automatically flagged it as such. Change your passwords by all means and then stop worrying about it. It is fact that every server exposed to the internet receives thousands of mostly automated probing attempts to see if the device has weak security/known loop holes/compromised credentials. Almost inevitably some are penetrated - if the network security is solid and properly configured then the confidential data will be relatively safe. In my day job I cover IT security and know full well that if an IT bod says they have never been breached then they are either outright lying or properly stupid. Breaches are a fact of life, sadly. del.gue
My wife got one these emails onto her work email. (Large multi national company). The IT guys told her it was common and that an old site had probably been hacked.
