Maybe enthusiasm over ability but!

I have just got my hands on a 1962 Weatherby mk5😁, it has been restocked in the past and the replacement is showing its age and has a couple of cracks. I was thinking it might be a nice project to make a new stock for it, but not too sure I have the skill to start with a £150 bit of walnut. It could end up being some very expensive fire wood!

So is there another (cheaper) wood that works like walnut ( as in machining not as being used as a stock) to practise on. The other thought was to get a stock from another rifle let a block of walnut into it and fit it to the Weatherby action.

What are your thoughts, any of it a good idea? Or should I seek professional help?

shame you're in sussex, I've got a nice piece of American black walnut big enough to get 2 stock blanks out of, that I never did anything with, only cost me £100

Not sure Boris is  going to lift restrictions enough to go picking up bits of wood
