Weight distribution and balance on my sporter means it comes up to my should and swings where I want it. You know when something just feels right? I didn't till I shouldered mine then I had to have it. It happens to have 30" barrels. I don't get to shoot it enough and every time I do I promise to use it more.

I shoot a couple of field semi autos one has a 26” & one a 28” barrel both shoot well in most situations great versatility by simply fitting extended chokes, giving the ability to handle most clays, sports trap, double rise etc, for skeet simply use the flush chokes . A shorter barrel will aid faster target acquisition, reduce front end weight and make the gun easier to handle for a beginner or a person of slight build. With good cartridge selection enjoyable to shoot, with out the experience and skill required to use a longer barrel style. It does require a lot of skill to use anything longer than 30” and good upper body strength to maximise a long barrel, great if you can handle it well! Simply don’t get a gun that’s too big to begin with, if you progress to competition or a specialised sport, then a specific gun would most likely provide the better hits/score!

Re reading this old thread brought a thought to mind.--Has anyone had a shoot with a 20 inch coach gun? I have a yearning to do this but not much chance here in the UK.

I collected a Baikal for Albert two weeks ago. It has 24 inch barrels with hacksaw marks and totally parallel bores. Nothing suspicious there then.

I had a Browning Humpback 5 shot with a 13" no choke barrel. That was rather good fun.

My Perazzi MX8 has 30 3/4 barrel's, with extended choked 31" I usually just use the flush chokes, I've owned 28/30 & 32, It seems well balanced because I don't think about the gun, I've owned it for around 6 years+, it weighs 8lb4, I have good and terrible days with it. I think it's all in the head, shoot a gun long enough and all the details become irrelevant.

Personally I shoot better with longer barrels BUT I am over 6ft tall and stand about 15 stone but that aside if I go to buy a shotgun I know almost instinctively as soon as I pick it up if it is going to be mine.  My little Yilditz 410 just sailed up to my shoulder and felt like and extension of my arm. That has a 30 inch barrel length.  At the opposite end I have a cheap nasty Huglu 410 which is now 24 1/2 inches barrel length...modified for sorting vermin at close quarters.  Horses for courses really.   Pick it up...does it feel right ?  If not then put it down again and try another and o not necessarily be persuaded otherwise.   I had a friend who wanted to buy his first shotgun. He asked me to go with him to the dealers to help him choose. I had him pick a few up and then one in particular, a nice Bettinsoli O/U at a sensible price he said felt nice. I was about to suggest he buy that one when the proprietor came up and eventually my friend was persuaded to pay almost £500 more for a gun which didn't fit him and he never shot well with..
