I have a rule with fungus, unless it comes in a packet from tesco I steer clear. The uk has more poisonous fungi than pretty much anywhere else and they all look the same, well to me at least.

I know exactly what you mean, I bought myself a book, good source, author is renowned expert, and I found it quite useful, however there's always a caveat about a lookalike that is at best inedible, and in some cases much worse.

I certainly wont eat anything that I don't feel is positively identified as safe to consume.

If in doubt leave it out.

Possibly beef steak fungus, edible but needs soaking first to soften.

There's also a look a like called Jews ear, also edible, found high up in trees.

Probably more that's deadly.

*Please don't eat it without a 100% positive ID*

The leading UK expert on fungi died from mushroom poisoning as did his wife the second UK expert.

Years ago on a survival course, I was told that anything growing above waist height is edible. I've never tested the idea and still have my doubts.

If in doubt leave it out.
