A sobering list

I think people are getting less concerned about the Covid virus. I know I am. But looking at the list below, it kind brings you back with a bump.

It really does bring it home. 37,000 people. That’s virtually half the stadium on match day at a rugby international. Imagine looking over and thinking that’s all those people gone. Very sobering.

I'd be interested to know how many of the 37 000 would have died anyway in that period

It’s sobering and sad for the people directly affected but, for perspective, the same period in 2019 saw ~180,000 deaths. I’m sure many of those had some living left to do.

Why, you could apply that to any death statistics. Would people ask if 1000 people died in car crashes in a year,  how many would have died anyway in that period.

Probably not a high proportion at all. My 42 year old cousin died of CV-19. She had asthma, but nonetheless her life expectancy was probably 80+. Many of the doctors, nurses and midwives who have died have been quite young.

It’s fine, we weren’t particularly close. I do feel bad for her 7 year and 5 year old daughters however. I’m sure even if their mum had an underlying life-shortening or terminal illness they would have given anything even to spend just a few more days with her. 

She was the oldest cousin and so my mum’s first niece. They had been very close for the first 20 years of her life. My mum couldn’t go to her funeral due to social distancing during the “lockdown”.
