A mate in our syndicate felled a rotten tree by simply pulling it over with the winch on his tractor but didn’t sever the rootball before limbing it, at which point it sat upright and resettled back into it’s hole. 
He then realised his dog was missing, and after calling and whistling didn’t bring its return he became anxious as possibilities started to dawn on him. He quickly secured the winch back to the tree, but it was too late unfortunately. 
This was about five years ago, and he has another dog now. He says it is something he’ll never be able to forgive himself for. Hindsight isn’t always a marvellous thing.

Hard lesson to learn ,unfortunately these jobs can never be under estimated

Yes, very sad indeed. As any dog owner knows, it’s bad enough losing one after a long and happy life, but to lose one in such circumstances must be awful.  He was distraught and inconsolable for some time understandably.
