The Heron
Have you noticed that when an expert is interviewed on the television in there home it is usually with a book case behind them I take it this is to give the impression that they are intelligent? TIGHTCHOKE
Yes it can be interesting to see what the book case holds. Oh and some of them are really untidy!

This isn't recent, I always try to look what's on the shelves, quite often if the person being interviewed has written something or many things there will be a few of there own books shamelessly displayed. AVB
Don’t we all? The majority of mine are sports autobiographies.

Yes. And you are correct. It is a very old technique. I learned that it was so many, many years ago when I did my International History and Politics degree in the late 1970s. You'll also note that often you'll see the same sort of composed picture with the expert (or more usually politician) sat at a desk, the bookcase in the background, with a telephone on it. To suggest that he or she has instant communication with his or her minions and/or world events. In modern times that telephone has often been replaced with a open laptop I often note. It's also why television news often used to have a "silly story" at the very end of the bulletin. To suggest in the listener's mind that the broadcaster has obviously told you everything that's important as they are now having to pad out the news bulletin with a silly story. And of course the "small truth and the big lie" beloved of Goebbels.
