Years, a long time ago, I was fishing on Llangorse lake with my brother in law in a boat, had a can of coke open placed beside me, went to have a drink and got a wasp in my mouth but it never stung me.

We used to as kids leave a bit of jam in the bottom of the jar, and have competitions who had the most next day when they got stuck.

Was telling my brother about the 6 stings, his last job before retiring was council pest controller, he said he was stung 35 times at the same time. Went a bit queasy but carried on working. He is 73 this year and never been in hospital. He used to carry with him as part of his kit a piece of 2 X 2 inch shaped to his specifications which he called his " persuader " , on one job I remember him telling me he had a call for a rat in a domestic bedroom, which had gone in a draw full of clothes, the woman was petrified, he said don't worry I will go and get my persuader, she asked what his persuader was and when he came back said this persuades them to come out.

Never been stung by a bee, can you react to a bee if your ok with wasp, or are they similar what they inject in you ?

A lady friend of mine was stung by a wasp while playing golf, back in the club house she asked for some first aid where abouts were you stung? asked the first aider between the first and second hole she replied I don't think we have anything that long and wide replied the first aider.

Or ahh, said the first aider. I think you need to see the professional as your stance may be too wide?

A friend took a slug of some orange juice without knowing a wasp was in it, it stung the back of his tongue and he had to be hospitalised due the swelling

I got stung in my 'private' area. I asked the doctor if he could take the pain away but leave the swelling alone.

Yes you can react to both, however the very rare incidence of severe reactions such as a anaphylactic reaction are more common from wasp venom (envenomation )than bee envenomation but can occur from both.

In most cases the sting creates a very localised inflammatory response at the stinger site and results in mild localised swelling, discomfort and itch to the site and resolves within short days with no additional effects outside of the sting site.

In very rare cases there is a larger immune response which results in a secondary "systemic" response which effects certain organs/structures and the circulatory system which results in a severe "anaphylactic reaction" away from the primary sting site. These systemic severe reaction can be life threatening. Any individual who has a severe reaction to envenomation requires allergy testing and in the interim and post need to be prescribed adrenaline pen x2.

Adrenaline pens are cheap and are life saving for individuals at higher risk of anaphylactic envenimation. Cost around the £30 pound mark and have to be prescribed, adrenaline has a short shelf life and pens can be required repeat prescribing every 6/12 (6months)

Interestingly bee antivenom prescription for 1 vial is currently £150 , wasp antivenom  is £150 for x1 vial and can only be prescribed by specialist and administered on specialist advice/training.

There are tens of thousands of wasp and bee stings sustained each year in the Uk and severe reactions are fortunately very rare However, unfortunately there are around 80 deaths a year in the UK from bee and wasp envenomation.

I was out fishing once and stood in a wasps nest in the bank! Got stung at least 10 times and seriously thought about diving in the water but it was only a shallow chalk stream. I did worry at the time I might have a bad reaction as I was on my own quite a way from help.

I used to only react to wasp stings but now there localised swelling for both, which is a worry as a beekeeper. Last week I was getting a swarm out of a tree when half of it fell on arms (no gloves). I nearly jumped off the ladder but the panicky moment subsided. Left arm swelled right up and the finger were like bananas, luckily I immediately took the wedding ring off.

Last year I disturbed a nest in a bird box, while tipping grass cuttings over the fence . 17 times they got me, I was wearing a pair of shorts and trainers as it was a nice day.

It tickled a bit.

Next day my mate brought some stuff round and I got my revenge, was easy over 100 in that little bird box, fascinating little creatures.

The nest foam works a treat. I had a wasps nest in an old green house, that was about about the size of a rugby ball. I gave it a long blast of foam (from around 10 feet away, and it instantly began to dissolve the nest, the wasps were sticking to the foam, returning wasps were also sticking to the goo. Less than an hour later no problem.

Go get em.
