Or, of course, this was a free people of British descent wishing to simply assert their Common Law rights. Accepted as being theirs inalienably and in perpetuity by the 1688 Bill of Rights. And against an appointed incompetent Tory Prime Minister who had not received any majority individual popular mandate from those affected but who nevertheless wished, without their consent, to disarm them of their lawful property under threat and duress of imprisonment if they refused.

Oh...sorry...that was John Major in 1996....and of course the OP was speaking of Lord North in 1776. But given the both dates end in a figure "six" and all the stuff that's pretty much similar on the both occasions that you could see how someone might confuse the one event with the other.
