In 30gno 5 on an individual pellet basis, each of the 232 pellets has enough energy to potentially  kill a pigeon at 60 yards, however the pattern for pigeon at full choke will have degraded to point at 40 yards that there is not enough pellets to kill reliably after this.
At half choke pattern fails at  35 yards and at IC pattern fails at 30 yards.

In 32g no6 on an individual pellet basis, each of the 304 pellets has enough energy to potentially  kill a pigeon at 50 yards, however the pattern for pigeon at full choke will have degraded to point at 45 yards that there is not enough pellets to kill reliably after this.

At half choke pattern fails at  40 yards and at IC pattern fails at 35 yards

In 28g no7 (euro no 7.5) on an individual pellet basis, each of the 340 pellets has enough energy to potentially  kill a pigeon at 45 yards, and the pattern for pigeon at full choke will have only degraded to point at 45 yards that there is still a surplus if pellets to ensure a reliable kill.

At half choke pattern fails at  45 yards and at IC pattern fails at 40 yards.

The 28g no7 and light choking on first barrel,  gives you largest pattern to allow for any aiming errors, will kill to 45 yards with half choke and is cheapest to buy, hence it popularity.
