Skoda Yeti Gearbox

Is there enough info' here for any of our technicians to give an idea of what may be wrong?

Went to change down  to overtake when going up a hill but couldn't. Stuck in top crawling in outside lane with traffic piling up behind me. Going down the other side had to stop at traffic lights at the bottom but could not engage 1st on green light. Bit of a panic - all the grockle going home with the next lot coming down and I'm sat there going nowhere so nor is anyone else - so it wasn't until later that I worked out I escaped by stopping the engine, engaging 1st with the clutch pedal depressed and then starting the engine. This is how I was also able to get into reverse as necessary - and then repeating to get into 1st. Could change up except sometimes could not get 5th (out of 6). Could not change down below 3rd at all. If I'd been forced to stop on a hill where slipping the clutch in 3rd was too much, it was back to 1st as described. In all cases even when successful it required a good deal of effort to get the lever fully home.

Any thoughts welcome. Local garage tomorrow first thing but, as previously, suspect they'll say specialist gearbox centre.

1.8 petrol turbo.

Yep, that is my unqualified impression. When in gear it goes just as ever. I have to say that I'm not totally surprised as I've had this little niggle with gears around the sprung bias area ever since I've had it so I'm half pleased it's gone now so that it can be put right.

As for rattles or noise, you've just hit the one problem of many with being deaf -  what noise, my car runs as smooth as silk. :sad1:

My girlfriend has got a 2.0d golf, same as mine. She had exactly the same problem, she kept trying to force it so she got it looked at before she bust the linkage.

Turns out it had, had a replacement clutch in the past, a non OE part and something had failed, which was in turn causing the gear selecting issue.

I had the same thing on my old Mk5 golf 170 diesel, when it warmed up it would not go into gear, after about a week of it getting progressively worse I took it to see a mate who diagnosed it a worn clutch but by then I'd done so much damage to the gear linkage i drove it all of 10 miles from he's place to my work and the linkage went completely and had to have it recovered back to him 😂

Lesson learned there.

Not sure if the yeti and golf share a gearbox or not?

That might be one blessing of being hard of hearing. My problem with cars is being chronically skint so any slight noise makes my heart jump and my wallet goes into panic mode!

If there was a rattle or noise in the gearbox you would likely feel it as well. The only gearbox involvement I can think of would be an issue with the selector where it goes into the box itself. If there was an issue with the linkage close to the gearstick It would feel like you are stirring a bucket of coal when you are trying to find a gear.  As my wife's late mother used to say " if you can't find it....grind it!"

could be clutch pressure plate .With engine running foot down on the clutch handbrake off try first gear and if you detect that the vehicle is wanting to move as you engage gear then probably clutch pressure plate knacked.

Thank you, just gave that a go. Did as you said and with the engine running I can not engage either 1st or reverse but the car wanted to move in the appropriate direction - not with any great effort but it did move.

Nice one, Scutt, got it in one. Thank you. Have to say that I really like this car but if I had to moan  about something it would have been about the gears. I would hazard a guess that the previous owner sold a damned good car because it was realised that something was on the way out - sickness and lockdown means I've done very little mieage since I got it - and it's taken a while to show up big time. All sorted now, gears as smooth as you'd wish for and didn't break the bank. So with a new clutch this will now be a keeper and see me out.
