Hi all

I seem to have the above, and can't get rid of it- been like it for months now and it's really peeing me off. Can't really rest it much due to one small child and one baby, and am getting well behind with gardening and DIY!

Spoken to doc, and he suggested ibuprofen (which I take), rest (difficult) and a wrist splint- which I have but find uncomfortable after about 20 mins usually.

Does anyone have any tips or remedies to help it heal? Really getting on my wick.

Cheers.

Sympathies. Mrs B has recently developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome which is a very painful  wrist problem in both wrists. Referred to a specialist GP the advice is wrist splints, overnight bedtime, for 8 weeks and Naproxine 500 mg. If this doesn't work it's an operation.....waiting time? Unknown.

Did they check for the possibility of a ganglion cyst? They can cause symptoms like that but would also limit some range of movement

As someone said above 500mg Naproxen twice a day. Wrist splints and keep up with them as they require rest more than anything.

Heat pad can help, or alternatively ice pack, different people differant tolerances. If warmth helps, buy woolly fingerless gloves that cover the wrist(pulse point)

Physio and exercise in these cases are about as much use as sucking smarties.

By substituting your left to compensate for your right or vice versa, can and usually does bring on the same symptoms in the opposite hand.

Privately the release operation is in-expensive and usually a 99% success rate. Around a 10 minute operation under local anesthesia.

Depending on how physical your job, you could be at full strength and fully working with physio after with 2 weeks. Pain free.

I would discuss your options with your GP and if necessary request a private referral.

If you're a union member this can be claimed via them if at all work related.

Colloquially its referred to as @#@#@#$ cramp, as in tennis elbow, house maids knee etc.

Good luck and remember the longer you leave it, the harder to fix 😉

My problem is arthritis. If I do too much it flares up and I find that when it has done so it's worse first thing in the morning. I turn over a lot in my sleep so my hands don't get much rest. The stabilising splints from Boots are a great help.

I was told by a surgeon that only rest can heal it permanently, as was the case with tennis elbow which I developed in both elbows some years ago. Carrying 8x4 boards of osb/MDF/ply didn’t help.
When I went for an op’ the surgeon told me it was a degenerative ailment only cured by rest, and that it would take a few months for each elbow to heal after the op’, so it didn’t happen as I was self employed.
We were laid off soon after my chat with the surgeon and the problem did in fact go away, never to return, even when we were taken back on by the same employer.
I had a ganglion removed from my wrist about 20 years ago. There is a deep scar but no reoccurrence, so if it turns out to be this, the op is worth considering.

Me too. Mine is the Osteo version. Left hip replaced, knees knackered, right knee needs doing - too much skiing over the years (not now!). Right hip agonisingly painful. Naproxine 500mg supplemented by paracetamol. Starting to use a stick. NHS say 28 days to see a consultant and 36 weeks thereafter for op. ie 10 mths total. Horrifying wait. We are having to consider digging deep. Fortunately my shooting buddy is like a mother hen as I hobble around trying to be useful.

Ibuprofen gel10% helps 👍

Ibopfufen tablets are a big no no with Naproxine. Is there anything on the info leaflet which says the gel is ok with certain anti inflammatory tablets? Thanks.

I have arthritis in my wrists. I find wrists splints at night help. It stops me bending my wrists in my sleep and makes them bearable in the morning. The ones with aluminium bars in and lots of padding work best for me. I bought Oppo 4082 blue wrist supports, but unfortunatley these don't appear to be available anymore. Something similiar might help.

Had it for years from my teens onward to into the 40s. not through what you may be thinking at that age but playing too much on badly set guitars .

Used to strap it up when not playing and being very conscious and careful of it when having to work play etc . also had cortisone injections in the wrist that seemed to help relieve the pain somewhat, took a long time to fade but no repeat of it.

Never had carpal tunnel but I've broken my scaphoid 3 or 4 times in my left wrist and never let it heal properly because I was an impetuous youth and all I wanted to do was be back riding racing. I thought I'd been getting arthritis but ignored it. I got to the point in March last year where I couldn't move it or really do anything, I thought I'd broken it again but it turns out I'd snapped a lot of the arthritis between the bones. Pain killers and a lot of overly tight strapping plaster OR when your in a pinch insulation tape made it bearable and then after a few months a big dose of steroids into the joint and its been as good if not better than it was before I hurt it the last time. I've been trucking along at probably a 2 on the pain scale sometimes even a 1 which is very good for me, since May last year.

Many thanks for the responses, all. Some good suggestions & info here.

Will talk to my doctor again about the options, but wrist support overnight does seem to be helping a bit more than during the day. Already using mouse left handed, and trying not to type with right hand. Failing, as I'm doing it now and it's so slow left handed only.

Pretty sure the "adult content" on my router is not to blame, alas, hence the children!!

Also, if desk bound try investing in some ergo keyboard and mice - perhaps look into using a trackball rather than a mouse. I do suffer occasionally and find using the mouse on my knee a lot more comfortable - but obviously this is when I am doing mouse heavy work (Diagrams etc) as it tends to fall off when you let go :D
