A-Tec A12 anybody

Evening all. I have been mentioned on my village whatsapp whinge group, shooting corvids early Friday morning on a field which will be planted with vining seed peas next spring. They will be hit heavily by woodpigeon as well as corvids. Does any body use the A-tec A12 sound moderator, and if so, is it any good because I think the villagers might get grumpy with me having essential crop protection fun!    I would be grateful if anybody could share their experience of one of these.

I’ve got one. It takes a fair bit of the noise away. With subsonics it’s good, with ‘normal’ cartridges there’s still the associated crack of them.

I would say with subs, most folk indoors in the house with windows closed wouldn’t hear anything from 150/200 yards away. If they where in the garden they would hear the gun but not readily associate it with a gun shot if that makes sense? It takes the bang away and doesn’t really sound like a gun.

Handling wise it’s excellent. Light so doesn’t affect balance too much and no effect on sight picture on rib

For the reasons that "bone" gave, I invested in one. I agree with stuartyboy's comments and it is better coupled with sub-sonics. It doesn't work with a ported gun. The sound of a shotgun is obviously a red rag to some people. If the sound is changed to something which is not obviously a shotgun then it will in all likelihood be ignored.  I need to carry out some further tests with my A-Tec before giving a definitive answer. I'll get back to you on this Forum.

One question I have on these is whether a semi auto (a gas one at least) will still work with one. Logically it shouldn't make a difference if the barrel is not ported.

I use it on a semi auto and the gun actually cycles better with it. I think this is because more gases are forced down the barrel to cycle the action due to the gases being restricted by the moderator if that makes sense?

Obviously that only applies to a gas operated cycle system, I’m not sure about an inertia system.

Certainly, my Beretta cycles better with lower weight cartridges with the mod on than without.

Interesting and it does make sense. I think adding any extra weight to the barrel or even the rest of the gun can interfere with the cycling of an inertia driven gun - although I did hear of a chap successfully adding a titanium moderator to a Benelli M2.

I'm interested in one of these. Got 'horsey' neighbours and they seem to think hearing shots will send the horses into meltdown. Although you can quite plainly see the horses happy as Larry carrying on eating oblivious to the noise.

She came marching over morning just as I was starting to make a real dent in the corvids that had been pecking the sheep. I politely apologised and packed up and referred back to the farmer to ask how he wanted to deal with it.

The farmer wants to keep them sweet as her fella helps out with some of the livestock when he's away. Although he agrees she's talking absolute rubbish about it scaring the horses. He's asked me to keep to the other end of the farm away from their boundary. But as **** law dictates it's where all the best flight lines and sitty trees are.

Has anyone successfully used one of these with a Hatsaan escort? They aren't listed in the choke options, but do they match the Mobil chokes? Also have you  the ability to choose your choke, I'd probably go for 1/2. Is the a-12 steel and plaswad safe? I know the hushpower once are fibre only

A moderator for a shotgun works by allowing the expansion and cooling of the gasses before they exit and not by restricting them, this type of moderator is common to firearms and performance motorcycles. You may find that the internal pressure remains higher for longer but I don`t believe it could be considered a restriction.

Why not just stump up for a 20g o/u investarm moderated gun. You can get them for around £500 and they are a brilliant tool with subs. I use mine all the time in villages, and around horses. They still jump a little but get used to it very quickly.
