grrclark
Looks like a belt driven geared blower, with a forge being the most obvious application. A smashing thing all the same.
Gordon R
grrclark - that is the consensus.
martinj
It is puzzling, it COULD be a film winder but I can't figure out what the enclosed middle area is. It looks as if it should be venting or blowing air, in which case it might be grrclarc's geared blower. The wheel centres are adjustable similar to a fan belt adjuster. Is the belt missing, or is it for tensioning film? The large wheel has a handle for winding where the small wheel has no handle so perhaps it's driven by the missing belt? grrclark
From the second angle you posted Gordon the multiplier effect of the wheel with the handle to the spindle of the fan rotor is pretty big, i bet it puts out a fair old volume of air. A drive belt from the big wheel to spindle of the secondary wheel and then another belt from the second wheel to the rotor spindle, it would be something like 15 or 20 to 1 as a ratio. A forge is an obvious thought, but it could equally be for something like getting a furnace going under a boiler, etc. Edited September 22, 2020 by grrclark

ehb102
Those wheels and handles are just like the ones on my great grandmother's sewing machine. Also winders. I guess that's just the same techniques for different purposes.
