BASC commits ‘Fighting Fund’ support to Humber wildfowlers

BASC is committing financial assistance and expert advice to Humber wildfowling clubs suffering from Natural England’s failure to provide a satisfactory consenting process.

Legal opinions are being gathered to ensure clubs that have been refused shooting consents have all the options and resources at their disposal to respond to Natural England.

This will be supported by BASC’s Fighting Fund, which was launched earlier this year to promote and protect shooting.

James Green, BASC’s head of wildfowling, said: “BASC is committing financial and staffing resources to areas that threaten the future of shooting. We are delighted to be able to support the Humber clubs at this level.

“The consenting process being undertaken by Natural England will have no conservation or environmental benefit. It simply demonstrates the licensing agency’s priority to gold plate regulation rather than to effectively manage the habitat for the benefit of the wildlife that relies on it.

“Wildfowlers have been the custodians of our protected sites for hundreds of years; Natural England continue to trample on history and conservation in favour of a precautionary approach. We must challenge it.

“The Humber is iconic for wildfowling and a key part of the history of BASC, which came out of WAGBI. It’s important we help shooting face down this threat.”

Fighting fund launched this year? - It was around 6 million last year when it had it's praises sung at your AGM?

Does it matter which year?

Good to see this. Never mind which pot the money comes from.

Agreed, good to see it being put to use, and James is hugely passionate about what he does.

Great news, i am pleased BASC are taking this on.

its a shame the clubs didn't use BASC in the beginning for their consenting issues they may have been better off for it, either way BASC have stepped up..

There’s a lot of history between the BASC and the Humber clubs not all very good.

If it wasn't for local wildfowlers setting up clubs and subsequently taking on leases from the Crown Estate in England, Wales and NI some 900km of coastal wildfowling could have been lost. A huge amount of volunteer time goes into retaining those leases and consents by club officials behind the scenes. BASC staff have played a key role assisting clubs across the country with those lease and consent renewals for many decades and that work continues today.

See below for an insight into the work of BASC's wildfowling team:

I think I can say the Humber clubs are extremely  happy with this announcement.  There are quite a few clubs sharing the shooting leases covered by the consent in question, most of which are affiliated to BASC. Yes they have chosen to use a third party consultant over the years to help with consents, land purchase etc, but they have, or at least the majority of the clubs have, remained members of BASC. The association (James Green + ) attended the last meeting with NE to discuss the upper Humber consent and saw at first hand what the wildfowlers have to contend with when attempting to deal with NE.

For anyone interested in a more in-depth insight into our challenge to Natural England's approach to wildfowling consents listen to the September BASC Podcast which features an interview with James Green, BASC head of wildfowling.

The podcast is also well worth a listen to hear more about how we are pushing back against negative press for shooting. And also hear about how we are fighting attempts to undermine the general licences for pest birds in Wales and attempts to restrict gamebird releasing in England.
