Non lead pellets in shotguns have been used for twenty years or so. It’s not like it’s just come out of the blue. There is a lot of clauses in the wiidlife and countryside act this is another one . It will prohibit using lead pellets in shotguns to kill wild animals. It won’t prohibit air gun pellets or rifle bullets for killing wildlife. The wildlife and countryside act doesn’t cover any target shooting. If lead pellets are still used after the law comes in then we may find shotguns are on the prohibited list to kill wildlife. The cartridge manufacturers will soon have bio wads now.

First part . Any form of lead ammunition used in a shotgun. Thats everything!

Its pretty clear, a ban. The second part is using lead ammo for taking / killing wild animal.

This is a Labour amendment to a Conservative government Bill. Its chances of passing are remote. If it's selected for debate BASC and other organisations will brief MPs to inform the debate. Expect to see it resurface in the Lords.

The amendment is not a serious threat to the current 5 year voluntary transition away from lead shot. The real threat is the EU's consideration of a ban on lead shot over wetlands which may be passed before December 31st.

This is because:

•    Under the EU proposals the UK, as a whole, would be considered a wetland and expected to implement the proposals in a shorter time -  which could be as little as 18 months.

•    The UK is bound by the withdrawal treaty to implement all changes to EU law passed before we exit on 31st December and BASC and other shooting organisations are working with the European hunters' federation FACE in opposing the EU proposals.

BASC will continue to fight against disproportionate and unsubstantiated restrictions on the use of lead ammunition and we have been leading this fight for 40 years. Viable alternatives to lead ammunition are simply not yet available in sufficient quantities or calibres either here or in mainland Europe. That is why we are working to prevent bad laws from entering into force whilst encouraging a five year research and development period for viable alternatives to lead shot for live quarry shooting.

So Connor why did BASC not choose to support the above and it was left to the Czech's to get the European Ban thrown out yet BASC still recommended a voluntary ban for the UK?

I'll say it again. You really couldn't make this up. BASC admitting that there aren't enough alternatives to lead shot available, yet are supporting the move away from lead shot in the hope that in five years time the problem will have somehow sorted itself out. How do you expect to introduce new shooters to the sport when you are actively supporting transitioning to ammunition that is considerably more expensive and less effective?

the larger amount of wounded birds will make great publicity the antis should have a field day

So shoot within the capability of the cartridges and the shooter. Steel has been used on wildfowl for 15 years or more so what is the big issue. If you wing a bird with lead it does not die does it!! Its wounded, so your comment is void.

Ive used steel on all types of bird and it works. People with some kind of false perception of what steel can or cant do is just rubbish. It kills just as lead does. The only issue we will have is older guns.

when the anti nuts start claiming steel wounds more birds i will be agreeing with them i used the rubbish so don’t be telling me it’s as good  i could always invite the antis to a demo using both
