How much does your shooting cost per year?

Nothing really - bought a 1000 cartridges a couple of years ago and still not half way through them as I seem to have been given loads over the years. No rent on the 11k acres I cover so it's all just down to ammo for the puffgun - pennies over the year. In my case it's hard to think of a cheaper hobby. Did spend £30 on 28g ammo this year so it's not all roses.

How the heck does it cost you £4 k a year for your dogs . I have two cockers  i buy a large bag on dog biscuits from my gun room  £10 cost, lasts them both about six week . They get the odd treat   Vets checks and booster  Jags  each year . Dont have insurance , never have never will. Total about £500  a year and that could be less .

Insurance is £2800 per year. Now cancelled. It has just crept up and up on direct debit. Circa £25 for 15kg dog food every 10 days or so. Vets bills, inoculations, worming, fleas and excess etc. We are going down to one dog due to cost.

My dog’s digestions not tolerate wheat, which is a pain. So gluten free Skinners. It really does annoy me to be honest, in my opinion the worst thing about the breed is the weak stomach. However they are a breed that has historically only been used to hunt so their ancestors have never had to digest wheat so o give them some slack. None of my Weimeraners have ever been able to handle wheat. The German import couldn’t or any the British bred. They eat a lot of food but don’t get fat, vet says they are underweight at 32kg per dog but I prefer them lean as less damage to their joints.

Whole life insurance from PetPlan, over a decade ago it started off good value, less than £25 per month but now is over a hundred per dog per month. It is silly money now and as we are slightly richer we can afford to “self insure”. If we have a big bill to pay we could find the money to do so. However for the last 10 years we have been relatively poor and so it made sense. The insurance owed us nothing until 2/3 years ago.

£230 per month on dog insurance?

Ours started off about £25 and they kept going up despite no claims. Have cancelled it now for my older dog that is 2 years old.

My pup is about £20 a month and I will pay it for 12 months and then cancel and keep the money.

Used to feed my old dogs Chudley’s working crunch, think it was about £11/12 a bag back in the day.

My current springer is rubbish on loads of different kibbles that I tried. I feed him on BARF now from DAF which is one of the cheapest options for raw feeding.

You Dog food is rated as amoungst the worst on the market - the independant website "allaboutdogfood" actually gives a red flag warning due to it's very poor nutritional content. Not having a go - but I think, for the sake of your Dogs health, you should look around at other options. Buy big bags from sellers such as Bitiba and you should find something suitable.

Yes 😭

One dog is almost 11 and still working, there hasn’t been a single year when both haven’t had operations. From deep stitches to a full knee rebuild at a specialist. We must have claimed on the insurance 6 times per annum as a minimum. All for injuries and accidents whilst working. They are thin coated so get ripped up on barbed wire - double strand fences are the worst. I should be a better owner and not send them over fences but if there is a bird or runner down I do not hesitate. I should do an album on here of their injuries as a warning to others to be better than me.

My average annual cartridge bill is £9k. Before dogs, guns, clothing, International trips, Clays and days in the field. No cash machines in heaven! #onelifeliveit

Can’t fault you, Sir, go for it.

I did know one chap who used to spend £70k/year on shooting and £30k on fishing.

About 5k in total, driven shoot, 6 or so days stalking, cartridges and rifle ammo.

This doesn't include a Pulsar thermal xm50 and other bits of gear (don't) tell the Mrs)

And 2.5k on an annual boar trip to Hungary that won't be happening thid year due to covid.

So about 9k really https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.1f40299b9d9aed1e3e7214c47b026073&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.giphy.com%2fmedia%2fXbxZ41fWLeRECPsGIJ%2fgiphy.gif&ehk=oRr0XCTDHNFppoDGjRyqIyh1%2bVo%2fas61DbxK3siuOY0%3d

If you are happy feeding them the stuff then that's great - all I suggested was that you read the review, if you have done so and are still OK with your choice that's fine by me - none of my business, but problems will come later in life if you feed a dog a poor diet. There are so many choices out there now and no excuses for not doing your homework - my Dogs food is carefully chosen with a view to quality and price - I feel that it's the very least I can do for my animals.

Rent £150 on the duck ponds . Petrol £150?inc feeding . With ammo etc i think £500 a year.
I only have the car for shooting really and that’s £600 a year tax and insurance.
£1100 a year if you inc that

How big are your duck ponds? How many? That's not a lot of money at all to rent a few ponds and a few outings on some ducks :)

My shooting:

12 bore club - has some decoying and walked up shooting - just under £200 for the year.

Wildfowling club - just under £200 for the year.

Clay shooting - in a good run will go 2-3 times a month over the summer/out of shooting season - about £50 a pop (thats cartridge cost included) say x 6 months (£150 x 6) - £900 a year give or take. Maybe more even.

Shooting over the dog or dog training, entering training days, working tests and now looking to run in trials etc etc. Bloody lots. I have driven several hours to get the dog into certain situations that I think will bring him on. I would say easily £2,000 a year.

Cost of guns - recently acquired an AYA 117, Rem Mod 7, Maxus, a 20 bore Silver Pigeon last year, couple other little rifles :)

Cost of travel, fuel and car use, probably a considerable cost, most of it being fuel.

Now on the upside - I got £71 refund from BASC as I already paid the insurance fee once in one of my clubs, fair play to BASC for that, credit where it is due.

I count the cost of the guns negligable, most of them can be sold for what I paid. The rifles are often more of a money sink than a shotgun as you gotta buy scope, mod etc and it all adds up, but once its bought that tends to be it for a while. (Until you start tinkering or swapping bits again lol).

Now If I didn't spend money every week or other week during the season I would just be off doing another hobby or past time, so I doubt I'd save that money, it would just be spend on something else.

On Tuesday I hunted my dog on a small shoot, he flushed 5 pheasants and had them shot over him by two other lads. After a bit of training I put him away and I shot over other people's dogs. I shot walked up partridge and pheasants, taking some cracking birds at good range, cost me £60 (it's usually only £40 when I don't shoot), which I think considering I got 5 birds shot over my dog in good training conditions, and then I shot as a walked up gun over some top field trial dogs, is a bloody bargain!

Thinking about this, what I have recognised is how quickly the cost of clay shooting can add up. I'm just thinking, if I stop clay shooting I could save almost £900 a year, and I reckon that would probably buy me 2 (or even 3 smaller) guns on a driven peg on potentially a very nice little day shooting :)

I am also considering selling on a few of my guns, I can only shoot one at a time, and despite dabbling with other ones, shoot my 12 bore silver pigeon very well.

It’s around 150 acres of ground with munty stalking too. It’s got munty but I’ve yet to shoot one on there. The pond is around 80 yards circle but the splash is the main thing we shoot and managed 42 duck 7 geese off it last year between 3-4 off us . Me and a mate feed it twice a week to keep it going but we get groups of 20 widgeon dropping in and teal . Not many mallards on the splash .

we pay £600 a year rent plus grain between 5 of us .

I think the one thing this shows and how relative my point on the other thread was. That if we were all squeezed on to Bismuth many people myself included would be forced into stopping doing the shooting you currently enjoy. How could you justify paying £1200/1000 cartridges? £1.20 a cartridge.

It really is the easiest way to bring down gun ownership in the UK without actually banning anything or seemingly with very little resistance and so far the big shooting groups are going along with the plan of saving the environment to make us look like saints.

If we don't fight to keep lead we will lose the right to shoot affordably.

People would soon get used to £1.20 per cartridge.
Remember when Labour pushed the price of a gallon of petrol to over £5?Much squealing, but everyone became used to it.

It's a x4 increase on spending on cartridges. It would have a massive impact on most peoples level of shooting and for many making it unviable!
