Fry is no by no doubt intelligent but do you not find him unbearable to watch and listen too?

On the contrary, I really enjoy both watching and listening to him, seriously.
I have all his books ( although I found ‘Moab is my wash pot’ hard work ) and am an avid fan of QI.
He may be described as many things, but unintelligent isn’t amongst them.

That’s interesting. ‘Moab is my wash pot’ is the one book of his I started to read one summer about 20 years ago as it was in my father in law’s library and I thought it looked accessible enough for me. I vaguely remember about some petty theft and also the comparison of the suitability of different parts of the human anatomy for sexual pleasure after he slept with a woman but I just wasn’t interested enough to keep up the effort of reading. I am a slow and poor reader I can admit.

He did an absolutely fascinating series of Instagram posts of his ties .....Fry’s Ties ( of which he has a huge collection ) and the history behind each one....who it was designed by, a little of their history, the history behind its design ( paisley pattern for example ) where he was when he bought it and functions he wore it to etc etc. It had a vast following each day, to the extent he is seriously considering writing a book about them all, hard on the heels of Troy, his most recent book.
Fascinating bloke.

I thought that it was the loathsome Stephen Fry that was the idiot's idea of an intelligent person? Anyway i once had a client remark that I reminded her of Stephen Fry. A comparison that can't stomach. So I replied "Well I can assure you Madam that I certainly don't share his bedroom habits."

That you choose to recant that particular line is rather insightful I think.

Why do you imagine that she would in any way consider that you might have shared his bedroom habits?  Do you feel insecure in yourself that she might have thought you were a gay man?

I think Boris has done as good a job as anyone under the current circumstances, not since the ww2 has a PM faced so many crisis in one sitting. As for his partner, she comes across as a decent and down to earth person who genuinely appears to be with Boris because she likes him, her views on field sports are her personal choice which I don't necessarily agree with, but just because someone has an alternative opinion, i think it's wrong to slate them.

Oowee - just who in particular could replace Boris? Vague suggestions about someone else in the party don't quite hack it.

? Your crystal ball is as clear as mine.

There are many different types of leader. The donkey has done his cheer leading job now someone needs to knuckle down to the detail. With Cummings gone (😋)and the party starting to reassert itself then there is hope that a more effective team with Civil Servant support can be put into place.

Genuine question, do you believe Theresa May, David Cameron, Gordon brown or Tony Blair did a better job?

I reckon :hmm:

May could do the job but only with BJ as a front taking the pressure. Blair and Cameron would have the sense to put a specialist in key positions.

I think Donkey had the wrong advisers for the job, immediately they secured Brexit but it's hard to switch loyalties. These advisers left no room to hear the voices of reason, crowded out by the cheer leaders.

He might have got away with fumbling the trade deal as he can blame Brussels for any failure and there is no benchmark. With Covid on top he is exposed for what he is.

Johnson has a psychological flaw fatal to anyone in high office with unpleasant decisions to make. He needs to be liked. That's why he'll never be as effective as was Thatcher or Blair. Both regardless of people's individual views make decisions and made sure then that that decision was implemented. Thatcher with the decision to protect the power stations during the miners' strike and Blair with foot and mouth disease and, of course, the Iraq War.

Johnson needs to be liked and let us not forget wasted £60 million on the ridiculous "garden bridge" for London. Also he's had covid-19 and that paralyses his mind, IMHO, to make dispassionate decisions about lockdown and etc. Just as in 1940 the French Government as they evacuated from Paris to Tours and then Bordeaux were (by driving through village after village of war memorials to the dead of 1914-18 unable to make a decision to fight on. But instead chose capitulation.

Their will to fight on being paralysed by their own experience of the losses...whole families of brother named on those memorials...killed form their own generation. Like him or loathe him, hate or love her, there would not have been this handcart of mixed messages and, frankly, confusion and chaos with either Blair or Thatcher. Quite simply Johnson isn't up to the job.

Personality over substance is what it boils down to. I believe Tony Blair was the tipping point though I tipped David Cameron to be PM in 2001 when I met him in a Surgery at Carterton town hall when we lived down there - purely based on personality.

I wish I had put a bet on him (DC) I would have got good odds :)

Bliar was a complete ****wit (albeit a smart operator) -  whilst showboating at the FMD outbreak his mismanagement squandered shedloads of money. And as for the Iraq War.... well, let's not even go there.

Leaving the labour vs conservative out of this. Let me throw this into the boiling pot.

the internet did not exists 20 years ago. Our decisions on the way we voted was either from the  newspapers and which camp they were paid from. Or what we discussed down the pub or working men’s club or on the golf course.

these days of everyone an expert and Facebook feeding mis information the lines are very blurred. But my belief is that PM need to be liked slightly more than they are disliked.

unfortunately BJ is now seen as a puppet in most eyes sticking by Cummings rather throwing him under the bus. Thatcher love her or hate got the job done. We need a strong leader and a strong party under them in these troubled times not one that’s spending all its time infighting!

my personal thoughts are that Cummins is running the country not the man with his name on the door.

I do wander what story is about to break about Cummins!
